The first day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Australia ended in a dramatic fashion. Initially it was once again Kusal Mendis who did the talking with his bat. The batsman scored a responsible fifty but was undone by Mitchell Starc. On the other side Kusal Perera and skipper Angelo Mathews were the pick of the batsmen. Mathews scored a swashbuckling fifty but that didn’t last long.

A clear sunny cricketing day saw Mitchell Starc’s ferocious, lethal bowling display as the left-hand Australian quicker bowler bagged a five-wicket haul. Apart from Starc, Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood too came up with special treatment for the hosts as the two created pressure on the batsmen. Nathan Lyon was another someone who troubled the batsmen later on and debut man Jon Holland also introduced a wicket in his tally. Sri Lanka too had a great start with the red cherry as the debutant Fernando dismantled Joe Burns’ wicket. Opener David Warner looked in aggressive touch but he was dismissed for 42 runs. Australia at stumps were 54/2, still trailing Sri Lanka by 227 runs.
