Cheteshwar Pujara’s unbeaten 63 gave India a firm hold on the opening Test against South Africa after off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 13th five-wicket haul to restrict the touring side to 184 on the second day on Friday…Full Report HERE

The day started with a total of 10 specialist bowlers on the two team’s lists, India and South Africa picking 5 each for the spin-friendly Test. Elementary mathematics suggested an early end to the Test. Five bowlers can take 20 wickets quicker than 4 bowlers, they still teach that in Class 2.

Despite India getting bowled out for just 201 in the first innings, home team’s batting coach Sanjay Bangar was optimistic at the post-stumps press conference on Thursday and said that the total was much bigger that what it looked. He also defended the pitch which has disintegrated badly on opening day, saying that was a “challenging track” and not “a bad one or a good one”.

# Twelve wickets have been lost on the first day of the present Test. The only instance of losing more than 12 wickets (13) on the first day of Mohali Test is in the India-New Zealand Test in October 1999 – 10 by India (83) and 3 by New Zealand (119/3).
