Cricket Updates, England vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Day 1:
2144 hrs IST: That’s it then! The play has been abandoned at Headingley. It was a day of two halves – Sri Lanka had the first and England had the second. Sri Lanka had England reeling at 83/5 in the post lunch hour but then Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow pulled back to have England at 171/5 after Day 1.
2135 hrs IST: More covers coming on now at Headingley. This doesn’t look promising for play today.
2035 hrs IST: Well its raining in Headingley now. The covers are on and play has been delayed.
2010 hrs IST: TEA! England lost James Vince and Ben Stokes quite early after lunch to have the home side in trouble at 83/5 but since then, Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow have picked up the mantle and gone about their business. At tea, England are 171/5
2002 hrs IST: And that’s FIFTY FOR BAIRSTOW! Rather quick knock too – 51 from 60 balls. Delivering the goods on his home ground in Yorkshire.
1957 hrs IST: Bairstow fighting nerves at the moment. He’s gone through two reviews now in the matter of five balls and hit six as well. Both the balls were going down leg even though the umpires felt differently.
1946 hrs IST: Slight droplets of water popping in. A few umbrellas coming out here and there but not enough to stop play. Or not just yet. England are moving towards the 150-run mark.
1906 hrs IST: England are over the 100-run mark. Moving along carefully under Hales and Jonny Bairstow.
1857 hrs IST: Nervous start for Alex Hales but now he’s reached 51 with a four. England nearing the 100 mark.
1831 hrs IST: England are five down! Slightly mistimed by Ben Stokes and he is taken by Matthews at mid-on. Nuwan Pradeep celebrates! Shake of the head for Stokes as he walks back. England are 83/5.
1823 hrs IST: JAMES VINCE GONE! Shaminda Eranga strikes! A thick edge by Vince and it flies to third slip. England are 70/4 now.
1738 hrs IST: And that’s LUNCH! England started slowly and grew into the game with Alastair Cook (16) and Alex Hales (38) getting the hosts to a good start. But since then it has been all Sri Lanka or Dasun Shanaka in particular. He has picked three wickets in his five overs so far. England stand 57/3 at lunch with Cook, Compton and Root back in the pavillion. James Vince and Hales batting.
1711 hrs IST: Root walks back and in walks debutant James Vince
1710 hrs IST: WICKET! It’s turning out to be a dream debut for Shanaka as he sends Root packing for a duck. Another full delivery and the right-hander edges it to a well-placed fine gully. England 51/3
1703 hrs IST: Hales brings up the FIFTY for England with a single. It was a good start for the hosts before Shanka rocked them with a double blow
1701 hrs IST: Joe Root is the new man in. He joins Hales in the middle. England need a steady stand now
1700 hrs IST: WICKET! Debutant Shanka gives Sri Lanka second success as Compton edges one to Thirimanne in the slips. It didn’t carry comfortably and Thirimanne took a neat low catch to give the debutant his second wicket. England 49/2
1659 hrs IST: Cook won’t be happy with his shot. Could have easily avoided. The skipper departs after scoring 16, still 20 short of 10, 000 Test runs
1657 hrs IST: WICKET! Cook chases a full, wide delivery and is out caught-behind. First Test wicket for Shanaka. England 49/1
1650 hrs IST: Hales meanwhile has opened up a bit. Starting to play more shots. Slowly shifting towards his natural game
1645 hrs IST: Cook moves to 16 now. He is 20 runs shy of creating history. He would become the first English batsman to 10, 000 Test runs, and youngest ever batsman to reach there
1631 hrs IST: Chameera to commence proceedings after drinks. Sri Lanka would want a wicket before heading into Lunch
1629 hrs IST: DRINKS! England 28/0 after 15 overs. Cook would be happy to not lose a wicket in first hour of play
1625 hrs IST: Hales sits nicely on the back-foot and hits Mathews through the off-side four a boundary. This would give him some confidence, ease nerves
1617 hrs IST: First change. Angelo Mathews into the attack. He replaces Eranga who bowled a nice spell with the new ball
1610 hrs IST: Sri Lanka put pressure on Hales. Four slips and a gully in position for the right-hander
1606 hrs IST: Pradeep generating nice angles from around the wicket to Cook. Sri Lanka new-ball duo were too straight earlier in the day. An off-stump line would help in these conditions
1600 hrs IST: England are off to a watchful start against Sri Lanka. Hales is slightly edgy but Cook is looking in good touch
1549 hrs IST: Hales survives a close shout. A full, swinging Pradeep delivery thudded into the opener’s pads but it would have missed leg
1547 hrs IST: Pradeep drifts on Hales pads and the right-hander flicks it to the ropes. He’s off the mark with a boundary
1546 hrs IST: Hales is yet to get off the mark but Cook has looked solid against Eranga so far. The seamer tested him with a nice channel outside the off-stump…
1540 hrs IST: Jos Buttler has some advice for Cook, who is 30 short of 10, 000 Test runs now
Cook to horn 6 sixes in an over to get to 10,000??

1535 hrs IST: The clouds are slowly making way for the sun. Not as overcast it was during the toss
1530 hrs IST: Nuwan Pradeep to share the new ball with Eranga. Three slips and a gully in place for right-hander Hales
1525 hrs IST: England openers Alex Hales and Alastair Cook out in the middle. Eranga with the new ball for Sri Lanka
1515 hrs IST: Eoin Morgan wishes England luck for the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka
