India vs West Indies 2nd Test Day 4 Highlights: Sai Sudharsan, KL Rahul look to close out day, IND inching towards 120-run target

India is closing in on bowling 200 overs here. Shubman Gill, going forward as captain, definitely thinks twice before imposing the follow-on option yet again. Well, if India had batted again, that would have opened an option of drawing this Test match for West Indies, which is a case and point to be made, but in the current situation, the bowlers have had to take a lot of toll on their bodies, and India batting again would have given them some break. And on top of all that, the final wicket partnership here batted for 21 overs, and Gill has brought back Bumrah into the attack.

Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja have started after the break for India, and three more overs have gone by, and neither Greaves nor Seales has looked in any trouble. The players are getting into nice positions and playing the ball with ease, as there is no help from the surface. Whatever the new ball moment, which was there to see, has now died down, and we are back to attritional cricket stuff. Gill, too, has been quite reactive to things here instead of being proactive, which can cut both ways as a leader if it is your approach.

It’s a Day 4 pitch, the bounce has become lower and the bowlers will look to make most of the footholes. You can expect spinners to operate from the end which has more wear and tear with the pacers operating from the other end. You need to pull the length back, bowl wicket-to-wicket and force the batters to play more horizontal shots. As for the batters, you will need to bat with a straight bat as much as possible.

Well, we are closing in on tea break here, and both Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales have handled themselves quite well. Seales has batted quite superbly so far. He has defended the good balls and against Ravindra Jadeja, he has shown the range of hitting skills as well. The ball once again is going in straight lines, and the singles are coming with ease for both batters. It is back to basics for the Indian team again, put the ball in the right areas, and hope something will happen from somewhere.

Since the West Indies have lost nine wickets, we have an extended session here. Jayden Seales and Justin Greaves have looked solid here, as many balls as they have faced. Shubman Gill has had to turn to other bowlers in Ravindra Jadeja now. The West Indies lead has gone past 50, and can they try and just frustrate the Indian bowlers by keeping them as long as they can out on the field? As per India they will be itching to close this innings off and get out there and finish the game today itself.

What a turnaround this has been from India here in the middle. Since the water break, especially wickets have fallen in clusters. The way both the West Indies batters were batting, Campbell and Hope, it did seem like it was going to be a long attritional day for the Indian bowlers; however, the new ball with the prominent seam was expected to react to this slow surface, and that is what happened. Kuldeep has been the biggest beneficiary of the new ball. While Bumrah is operating at the moment, it might not be a bad ploy for India to get in Sundar or Jadeja into the attack. As we update, Bumrah has picked Anderson Philip.

Two more wickets have fallen here. Kuldeep Yadav it is the first one was Roston Chase, who tried to work the ball on the leg-side and got the leading edge to the close-in fielder, who took a lovely catch diving forward. And then Kharry Piere tried to hit one over mid-off and was caught by the fielder there. Well, for a brief while, not long ago, during the partnership between Roston Chase and Shai Hope, there were thoughts that India could lose this game, but now that thought is completely gone out of the window, and India are in the tail and Kuldeep is in top rhythm.

That one kept low from Kuldeep Yadav to Imlach. He was on the back foot and was trying to play the ball on the leg side, which was more induced by masterful field placement from Kuldeep, and the new ball seam ensured the ball would react to the surface. While the morning session looked flawless this session so far, both dismissals have come off the ball, keeping low, which will stay in the minds of the batters, especially from the end Kuldeep is operating the northern end. Now the gates seem to be slightly opened for India.

India has lost another review here. It was a poor call from Shubman Gill. The ball hit the pads of Imlach, and clearly it did seem like it was going down the leg-side, and the umpire deemed it not out. However, Gill has decided to send it upstairs, and it was the umpire's call on impact, also missing the leg-stump on line. It was a bit of a desperate review from India. They have to make sure Imlach and Roston Chase are dried down for singles and make batters get stuck at each end sooner or later. There will come a ball that will do too much or stay low to get the wicket.

An outside edge from Siraj, which went for a boundary, brings up the century for Shai Hope. After scoring those twin hundreds in Headingly early in his career, he has once again shown his promise today. West Indies will be hoping this innings is not just an off but signs of the future where he is going to be the mainstay in this batting order coming at the crucial number four. However, as of now, it is important that he extends the West Indies' lead as much as possible and takes them to a score that may create self-doubts in the Indian side.

It was a magnificent century by John Campbell in that morning session. It is he and Shai Hope who have changed the complexion of this game. It has been an attritional morning for India, they could only pick up one wicket and looked a tad bit clueless in that morning passage. They will be hoping that a bit of luck goes their way and the wicket starts to misbehave.

That is the end of the morning session, and no prizes for guessing who it belonged to. It has been the West Indies all the way, and it seems like the Indian bowlers might have a long day today. This is the risk that is always around the cards when teams decide to impose follow-on. India has bowled about 160 overs, and the way the pitch is behaving and the West Indies are batting it is going to be easily another 60 overs of bowling. Start of the show, though for the West Indies today has been John Campbell. If the West Indies are to get anything out of this game, the Player Of The Match conversation should involve him.

Another nice partnership here between Roston Chase and Shai Hope. Just like Chase has been allowed to get away with his innings here. This is where Gill could have been a bit more proactive with his field-sets by keeping in close-in fielders and stopping that rotation of strike. If the batter is exposed to the bowler for too long, there is a chance that he bowler can plan a dismissal. As of now, the bowlers are going through motions and hoping a wicket will come their way from a mistake made by the batters.

Roston Chase has started here on a positive note with a boundary on the leg side. Wonder if this might be the approach from them, wicket offering nothing, which will be a statement from them. However, they have to be careful about maintaining that right balance. West Indies are still not in a situation to win this game, but if they continue to build this partnership for another good session, they might start having hope of getting something out of it.

This has been the West Indies' morning hour so far. Not a lot of times in the series, West Indies have had things go their way, but in this Test match, since yesterday, this has been a cracking batting from them. As for India, they seem to be a bit short on ideas at the moment to create those breakthroughs. These are the challenges of playing on good wickets; getting wickets sometimes can get iffy. As we update, Ravindra Jadeja has picked up Campbell. The batter tried to reverse-sweep and missed the ball completely, and there was a breakthrough.

Mohammed Siraj has come into the attack. He has been the pick of the bowlers for India in this series so far, and he will be hoping to make the most of the reversing ball. This is going to be a testing time for Shubman Gill, the leader. In England, he had to deal with one kind of challenge, and forcing the issue here will need a different type of tactics from him; he has to be innovative and now definitely needs to start thinking out of the box.

We had a close call here, the ball hit Campbell's pad/bat and was sent upstairs for an LBW review; however, it was indecisive in the end for the third umpire, and Campbell was deemed not out, and he survived. Almost 30 minutes into the morning session, there is hardly any help for the Indian bowlers to work with. There is an odd-ball through sheer skill, the bowlers are making something happen, but from the pitch, there is nothing much to work with. This is where India is blessed with the bowling options they have in their attack. They have six bowling options, which cover all bases.

It is Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah who start the day for India. There will be a bit of moisture in the surface for the bowlers to work with in this morning's session, and India needs to make the most of it. Whatever turn or seam moment both the bowlers will get, it is going to be in this session, and once we get into the noon session after the moisture has dried out, batting will get easier again. Also, it is heartwarming to see Shubman Gill start with his two best bowlers in the morning session, as yesterday, Bumrah did not come into bowl till the 32nd over.

After quickly taking two wickets (Chanderpaul and Athanaze) and appearing set for another swift victory like the previous match, India was unexpectedly held up by a resilient partnership from John Campbell and Shai Hope. These two West Indies batsmen countered India's spinners by aggressively attacking them and rotating the strike effectively, successfully building a vital stand that saw both players score half-centuries, demonstrating tenacity despite facing a couple of lucky escapes (umpire's calls on close LBW shouts).

“There was a discussion to bat. The last two wickets took longer than we would have hoped for. We felt 275 was a good lead. We thought the wicket would keep deteriorating. But it has slowed down even more. It is challenging to get any pace from the wicket. You have to fire the ball in. And when you fire the ball in, there are less chances of the ball spinning. Campbell and Hope batted beautifully. So we would be back tomorrow and get our plans right and hopefully get into the tail,”

“We have asked for slow turners, not rank turners. This is what we got, so we have to work hard for wickets,” he said. “Every ball is not spinning, and there is not much bounce either. So we are having to put our shoulders into it and try to generate something. The slower balls, without bounce, are allowing the batsmen to go on the back (foot) and negotiate. So we are having to mix, slow and fast in the air, with lots of revolutions. Try and bring in different variations.”

Initially under pressure at 35/2 in their second innings, John Campbell and Shai Hope forged a crucial, unbroken century partnership—their best of 2025—to ensure the match was extended into a fourth day. By successfully resisting the Indian bowlers for the entire third session and winning their first session of the series, they finished the day trailing by 97 runs but demonstrated a renewed sense of pride and resolve against a dominant opponent.

“We always knew that he’s a quality player. Obviously, the 100 in the first Test and also the way he went about it yesterday,” said Ten Doeschate after Stumps on Day 3.

“No qualms about trying to push on. He could have finished the day not out there, he was on 44. But the message went out that we’re going to try to wrap it up pretty soon, and he takes them on and gets out straight away. So, in terms of the culture, this is how we want from the guys, play for the team first, we’ve been very impressed with what we’ve seen from him.”

After a poor performance in the first innings, the batters have fought well in the second innings. The onus is now on India to pick a few wickets and restrict the West Indies before getting those 97 runs.
