Statistical highlights of the second cricket Test between India and Sri Lanka that concluded in Colombo on Monday.

# India’s triumph by 278 runs is their biggest over Sri Lanka in terms of runs in Tests, eclipsing the 259-run win at Ahmedabad in December 2005.

# India have won five, lost seven and drawn eight out of 20 Tests played against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

# Colombo (PSS) is the only venue in Sri Lanka where India have recorded two Test wins – their previous win at this venue being by 5 wickets under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2010. Apart from this venue, India have won one Test each at Colombo, SSC in 1993; Kandy in 2001 and Galle in 2008.


# India’s 278-run win is their second largest in terms of runs in an overseas Test, next only to the 279-run victory over England at Leeds in 1986.

# Since winning a Test match by 95 runs vs England at Lord’s in 2014, India have recorded their first victory in ten Tests – five in a row – three to England and two to Australia, followed by three drawn matches – two vs Australia and one vs Bangladesh and a defeat to Sri Lanka at Galle

# Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, India have won their first Test, losing two and drawing the remaining two – winning % 20.00.

# Sri Lanka’s 134 is their lowest completed innings total vs India in Sri Lanka – their third overall vs India – the lowest being 82 at Chandigarh in November 1990.

# Ravichandran Ashwin, with 17 wickets at 16.35 runs apiece in two Tests, has established an Indian record for most wickets in a Test series in Sri Lanka, obliterating the 16 (ave.28.12) in three Tests in 2008 by Harbhajan Singh.

# Dimuth Karunaratne took his aggregate to 297 (ave.49.50) in eight innings, including three fifties in the fourth innings. His fourth innings average is his highest in any innings in Tests.

# Karunaratne’s 46 is his highest score vs India in Tests.

# Virat Kohli’s 78 is his first fifty in a winning cause in an overseas Test, surpassing the 25 vs England at Lord’s in 2014.

# Kohli’s aforesaid innings is now his third highest in a winning cause in Tests behind 107 vs Australia at Chennai in February 2013 and 103 vs New Zealand at Bangalore in Aug/Sept 2012.

# Ashwin’s bowling figures of 5 for 42 are his second five-wicket haul vs Sri Lanka – his 12th in Tests. His excellent performance is the best by an Indian bowler vs Sri Lanka at P.Sara Oval, surpassing Chetan Sharma’s 5 for 118 in September 1985. He is the first Indian bowler to take two five-wicket hauls in a Test series in Sri Lanka.

# Ashwin’s above figures are the second best by an Indian bowler in a winning cause in Sri Lanka next only to the 6 for 102 by Harbhajan Singh at Galle in 2008.

# Ashwin has produced nine instances of five wickets or more in an innings in a winning cause in Tests. Only two Indian bowlers have taken more five-wicket hauls in victories – Anil Kumble (20) and Harbhajan Singh (14).

# Ashwin has registered twelve instances of five wickets or more in an innings – an Indian record by a bowler in his first 27 Tests.

# Just five bowlers in Test Cricket have taken more such five-wicket hauls in the first 27 Tests – England’s Sydney Barnes (24), Pakistan’s Waqar Younis (16), England’s Ian Botham (14), Australia’s Clarrie Grimmet (14) and South Africa’s Hugh Tayfield (13). Pakistan’s Fazal Mahmood had registered twelve such instances.

# Only five Indian bowlers have produced more instances of five wickets or more in an innings. – Anil Kumble (35), Harbhajan Singh (25), Kapil Dev (23), Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (16) and Bishan Singh Bedi (14).

# Lokesh Rahul has got his first Man of the Match award in Tests.

# Ajinkya Rahane’s 126 is his highest score in a winning cause in Tests, surpassing the 103 vs England at Lord’s in 2014. The said innings is now the second highest by an Indian batsman in a winning cause in a Test match in Sri Lanka next only to Virender Sehwag’s 201 not out at Galle in 2008.

# Amit Mishra (7/72) has produced his best bowling figures in a Test match, surpassing the 7 for 106 vs Australia at Mohali in October 2008.

# Mishra has captured 12 wickets in two Tests of a series for the first time – his career-best in a series being 14 (ave.24.07) in three Tests vs Australia in 2008-09.

# Jehan Mubarak has got his fifth duck in Tests – his second vs India.
