India vs South Africa, 5th ODI: India beat South Africa by 73 runs to clinch series

India vs South Africa, 5th ODI: India clinched the series against South Africa with a 73 run win at Port Elizabeth. The win gave India an unbeatable 4-1 lead in the series. India have never beaten South Africa away in a bilateral ODI series.

Rohit Sharma ended his barren run of form and scores in South Africa and it came in a winning cause – a series winning cause. After poor string of scores in South Africa, Rohit turned things around with 115 runs and took India to 274 runs which in the end was far too much for the Proteas to chase down. At the end of the evening, India scripted history with a 73 run win – first ODI win in Port Elizabeth but more importantly a first bilateral series win for the Virat Kohli-led side. Hashim Amla scored 71 runs for South Africa in the reply but he didn’t get much support from the middle order which couldn’t repeat the magic of Wanderers once again. Rohit Sharma earned himself the Man of the Match honour for his 115 run knock.

India vs South Africa, 5th ODI in Port Elizabeth, Highlights:

  1. 12:10AM
    14 Feb, 18

Chahal dropped a catch earlier in the over but this time he gets Morkel leg before. Beats him on the inside edge, spins in and Morkel gets his defence all wrong. Umpire raises his finger and INDIA WIN BY 73 RUNS!

  2. 11:57PM
    13 Feb, 18

Shamsi is ninth wicket to fall and that is some take from Pandya. Mix up between Hardik and a fellow India player. Neither went for it initially before Pandya plucked his hand out to take it with one hand. Beautiful take in the end but that was one odd mix up!

  3. 11:54PM
    13 Feb, 18

Heinrich Klaasen too walks back. He comes down the track, Kuldeep's delivery spins away and he misses it completely. Dhoni does the rest. Last recognised batsman is dismissed. South Africa are 197/8

  4. 11:51PM
    13 Feb, 18

Kagiso Rabada goes for a big heave and connects well but it is straight at Chahal and he holds on to reduce South Africa to 196/7. Kuldeep Yadav the wicket taker. Wrist twins at it again!

  5. 11:35PM
    13 Feb, 18

Klaasen has changed the equation here and is saying that he or South Africa are not going away without a fight. Kuldeep Yadav bears the brunt of that. Terrible length by the spinner too and Klaasen makes the most of it.

  6. 11:26PM
    13 Feb, 18

BOWLED! Phehlukwayo fails to read the wrong one from Kuldeep and is castled. It is bowled slowly and dips into him. The batsman strides forward but doesn't get anything on it. Finds the gap between bat and pad. SA go six down. They need 107 from 87 balls

  7. 11:19PM
    13 Feb, 18

BEAUTIFUL FIELDING! That is a very, very difficult decision for the third umpire to make. Hashim Amla runs at the non-striker's end and Pandya's direct hit has the big, big wicket. Amla with a punch towards mid off, Pandya gathers cleanly and hits the stumps bang on. Amla's toe end of the bat was on the line when the bails lit up. Thin margins and it could be the eventual difference. South Africa are 166/5

  8. 10:58PM
    13 Feb, 18

A loud lbw appeal against Amla but the umpire shakes his head. India don't have any reviews left. Had it gone upstairs, that would have been gone. Three reds on review. To add insult to injury, Amla brings up his fifty

  9. 10:42PM
    13 Feb, 18

Yuzvendra Chahal with an acute celebration as he gets David Miller bowled. The South Africa batsman comes down the ground, misses the ball completely and it spins in to hit the leg stump. Chahal shushes the crowd and Kohli celebrates. Not a no ball this time. PHEW!

  10. 10:38PM
    13 Feb, 18

Ajinkya Rahane has dropped it and Hashim Amla survives once again. Short and outside off by Pandya, Amla slashes it and it goes quickly to Jinks who lets it fall at backward point. Maybe too close to him and carrying plenty of momentum on it

  11. 10:35PM
    13 Feb, 18

A miscue from Hashim Amla and he gets away with it. Amla doesn't connect well with this ball from Chahal and the inside out loft heads towards deep extra cover. Iyer covered plenty of ground but it feel in front of him in the end

  12. 10:27PM
    13 Feb, 18

David Miller has spanked it straight back at Chahal who tries to latch on with a one-handed take. But it was hit with some serious venom. It has hit Chahal hard on the palm. Physio comes out to tend to him.

  13. 10:04PM
    13 Feb, 18

Chahal and Kohli look confident that they have David Miller leg before. Consult with Dhoni and go upstairs for a review. No inside edge there. But after pitching on middle, it was going on to miss the leg stump. Kohli looks baffled that it was spinning this much. India lose their review

  14. 9:45PM
    13 Feb, 18

THAT'S THE BIG FISH! AB de Villiers walks back and Hardik Pandya has him gone for the second game in a row. That was a loose shot from AB. It is a good length ball outside off, no deviation to it and AB with no foot movement drives away from his body. Gets a thin edge behind to Dhoni

  15. 9:40PM
    13 Feb, 18

South Africa go two down as JP Duminy departs for just one. Pandya slants it and gets it to straighten late on. Duminy went hard on that drive and the outside edge goes to Rohit Sharma at first slip. South Africa are 55/2

  16. 9:39PM
    13 Feb, 18

MARKRAM GONE! Leading edge from the South African skipper and it is taken by his counterpart and mid-off. Bumrah the wicket-taker.

  17. 9:23PM
    13 Feb, 18

Two consecutive boundaries are followed by a single and Makram brings up 50 for South Africa in the 9th over. Been a breeze except for that dropped chance. Amla on 16 and Markram on 32

  18. 9:13PM
    13 Feb, 18

DROPPED! Shreyas Iyer has let go of a dolly and Aiden Markram survives. Came at a good height, good pace and a bit casual there Iyer. It was on good length and Markram went for the drive, played uppishly and comfortably went towards Iyer who lets this go. Kohli is not pleased....

  19. 8:46PM
    13 Feb, 18

Welcome back! We're set for South Africa's chase of 275 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to open the bowling for India. Hshim Amla and Aiden Markram to begin the run chase

  20. 8:19PM
    13 Feb, 18

Kagiso Rabada's final over is worth just five runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains unbeaten on 19 and Kuldeep Yadav on 2. India: 274/7 (Rohit 115*, Kohli 36; Ngidi 4/51) against South Africa in fifth ODI at Port Elizabeth

  21. 8:01PM
    13 Feb, 18

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's quest to push the tempo in the penultimate over doesn't work out. First ball goes for a four but he's dismissed off the second. Ngidi once again and well taken catch by Markram. Moving forward and on full stretch to take a smart catch. India are seven down

  22. 7:43PM
    13 Feb, 18

Another edge, another set batsman, another catch, another blow for India. Shreyas Iyer departs for 30 and Ngidi strikes once again. Short and wide, Iyer's foot not in position for the shot and it is edged behind to Klaasen. The Ngidi-Klaasen combination once again. India go from 236/3 to 238/6

  23. 7:33PM
    13 Feb, 18

Golden duck for Hardik Pandya. Ngidi turns his poor day at the office into a fantastic one with Rohit and now Pandya. India's quest for a big score has been hurt significantly now. Double blow for India. 300 looks a tough ask now

  24. 7:32PM
    13 Feb, 18

Rohit Sharma departs for 115. That was a fantastic delivery from Ngidi and Rohit has edged it behind to Klaasen. Worst time for India to lose Rohit here. Tried to slash it but it came into him and cramped for room, Rohit can only muster an edge behind. Extra bounce, came in and India lose their fourth

  25. 7:12PM
    13 Feb, 18

HUNDRED FOR ROHIT SHARMA! 17th ODI century for Rohit. 101* from 107 balls - 10 fours, four sixes. That's his second ODI century against South Africa and first at this venue. Not been a convincing series for him but he could well change that script today if he were to go on to take India to a massive score. This inning has seen it all - classy shots, edges, run outs, dropped late on but he's persisted. Flicks it off the pads and runs a double to bring up relieved expressions in the Indian dressing room

  26. 7:01PM
    13 Feb, 18

DROPPED! SHAMSI DROPS ROHIT AT 96! Was a regulation catch for Shamsi at third man but he's let it go. Rohit ramped that ball for the third man region, was into Shamsi's hands and should have been curtains for the India vice-captain. But it has scooped out and allowed Rohit to bat on

  27. 6:52PM
    13 Feb, 18

Rohit Sharma survives a loud appeal for bat/glove, thigh pad and caught behind to Klaasen. After some deliberation, South Africa review. Rohit gestured to Iyer that it had hit his thigh pad. And so it did. UltraEdge confirms it.

  28. 6:46PM
    13 Feb, 18

RAHANE RUN OUT! Ajinkya Rahane is off the blocks quickly even as Rohit kept sending him back. Back-to-back run outs for India. Rahane goes for 8. INDIA 176/3

  29. 6:31PM
    13 Feb, 18

RUN OUT! A yes and then no from Rohit Sharma and Kohli's return to non-striker's end is short. South Africa get the breakthrough. IND 153/2. A seventh run out between Kohli and Rohit. Kohli goes for 36 and that is his first under-50 score this series. At the other end, Rohit is approaching a hundred

  30. 5:52PM
    13 Feb, 18

Rohit Sharma brings up his 35th ODI fifty. 50 from 50 balls, five boundaries and two sixes. Finally Ro-Hit ends his barren spell with the bat and adds fifty to his tally. First of the series for him and third against South Africa

  31. 5:30PM
    13 Feb, 18
IND vs SA Live Score: 84/1

The game has slowed a bit in PE. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are rotating the strike but no boundaries are coming. India are 84 for 1 after 14 overs and scoring a rate of 6 runs per over.

  32. 5:20PM
    13 Feb, 18
    Welcome, Phehlukwayo!

Virat Kohli takes a couple of small steps forward and makes a decent delivery from new bowler Adile Phehlukwayo as a overpitched one. A good cover drive for four from the Indian captain

  33. 5:17PM
    13 Feb, 18
    Massive six from Rohit

We all know Rohit Sharma loves playing the pull shot. Ngidi bowls a short ball which is just at a perfect height for Rohit to pull. He does it and that lands way back into the stands . What a shot!

  34. 5:14PM
    13 Feb, 18
India vs South Africa Live Score: 61/1 after 10 overs

South Africa have bowled 10 overs in this innings and India have reached 61 for 1. Scoring at just over run a ball. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma at the crease. Change in bowling as Lungo Ngidi replaces Morkel

  35. 5:05PM
    13 Feb, 18
    Kohli at the crease

50 up for India in that over but a wicket for South Africa too. India are 52 for 1 after 8 overs. Virat Kohli has joined Rohit Sharma in the middle. Morkel and Rabada continue

  36. 5:03PM
    13 Feb, 18
WICKET! Shikhar Dhawan c Adile Phehkelwayo b Kagiso Rabada 34

GONE! Big wicket for South Africa. Dhawan has fallen in the trap. The previous ball was short and wide which Dhawan guided over gully for four. The next one is short and cramping Dhawan for room. He is late on the pull and the ball flies straight to deep fine-leg. India lose their first wicket

  37. 5:00PM
    13 Feb, 18
India vs South Africa Live Score: 43/0

It was a slow and cautious start from the Indian openers but Rohit and Dhawan have now accumulated some quick runs and given India steady start. A flurry of boundaries from the openers.

  38. 4:56PM
    13 Feb, 18
    What a shot, Rohit!

Rohit Sharma charges down the pitch and clobbers one over long-on for a massive six off Kagiso Rabada. That will give him a lot of confidence against Rabada. Stunning shot. India upping the ante here

  39. 4:53PM
    13 Feb, 18
    Runs off Morkel

First runs off Morkel's bowling! The last ball of his third over has been cut by Rohit Sharam through the point region and that has travelled quickly to the fence. Great shot from Rohit. India 17/0

  40. 4:47PM
    13 Feb, 18
    Dhawan opens arms

Rabada tried cramping Dhawan for room with short ball directed into his rib cage but the Indian opener pulls it for four. He then gets a deft touch on a pacy delivery which goes over slip cordon for another four. India 13/0
