IND vs NZ 2022, 3rd ODI Highlights: India lost the three-match ODI series against New Zealand 0-1 after the third game was called off due to rain at Christchurch.

Sent in to bat, India were all out for 219 in 47.3 overs with Washington Sundar (51) and Shreyas Iyer (49) doing the bulk of the scoring. In reply, New Zealand were comfortably placed at 104 for one in 18 overs when the heavens opened up.

India bowled out for 219 runs, and Washington Sundar made his maiden ODI 50. Apart from that, there has been not a lot of talk about Shreyas Iyer looking good for his 49 rest of the batters struggled with the seam moment of the surface. Daryll Mitchell and Adam Milne have picked up three wickets each.

My white-ball numbers are not that bad: Pant

Under immense scrutiny for his poor form in limited overs cricket, dashing wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Wednesday said his white-ball numbers were 'not that bad'. Pant has been terribly out of form in limited overs cricket this year, scoring just one fifty in the shortest format way back in February against the West Indies, while crossing the 30-run mark only twice in the 21 innings that he has played in 2022.

In ODIs, the 25-year-old had two fifties and a hundred in the nine innings he has played this year. '...the record is just a number. My white-ball numbers are not that bad okay,' Pant told official broadcaster Prime Video ahead of the third and final ODI here on Wednesday.

In comparison, Pant has been at his best in the Test format and boasts of centuries in England, Australia and South Africa. Pant said he doesn't believe in comparison at this juncture of his career. 'Comparison does not make sense right now, I am just 24-25 years of age. If you want to do the comparison, you can maybe do it when I am 30-32. Before that, the comparison does not make sense to me,' a visibly miffed Pant said. Pant, who is the vice-captain for the ongoing series, endured another failure, scoring just 10 in the third ODI on Wednesday.

Talking about his preferred batting position in limited overs cricket, Pant said: 'I would choose to open in T20Is, number 4-5 in ODIs and in Test I'm batting at 5. Yes, the game plan changes when you're batting lower down the order but at the same time you have to bat where the team wants you to. 'There's no need to premeditate in ODIs, only in T20s you need to premeditate. - PTI

Kane Williamson says

"When we have been playing cricket we have been applying ourselves. Some good stuff in the rained off games too. We knew that 20 overs would constitute a match, but we could see the weather coming, it has been following us. Daryl has been hanging out for a bowl for ages. Milne felt a niggle but didn't want to stop. Focus changes to the Test arena. Guys get a break now and that's important too. Been pretty busy. We will regroup as a Test team after the break."

Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan says

"Absolutely, going to Bangladesh, hopefully the weather will be better there. We are a young unit. The bowling unit learnt about bowling the good length area more. We were short at times. All the seniors are going to be back in the side. More Asian wickets is a more practical journey to the World Cup for us. Important to get the small things right - right lengths for the bowlers, batting close to the body in these conditions for the batters... these are the learnings."

MoM- Tom Latham

"It was a nice series for the whole group and personally as well. Bit of a shame I didn't get any play in the next two games. We bowled fantastically well this morning. Hit the right lengths and got some movement off the surface and restricted them to that total. Finn played uncharacteristic in terms of his usual aggressive way. The ball was moving around and it did enough out of the right lengths. Mitchell did a fantastic job too. Lot of the guys have played each other, especially the IPL so there is some friendly banter. Certainly not cold for us but very cold for them."

New Zealand vs India live updates: Should Sanju Samson play ahead of Rishabh Pant after India vice-captain’s failure in New Zealand?

In the final ODI of the New Zealand tour in Christchurch, India wicket-keeper and vice-captain Rishabh Pant was out miscuing a pull shot, off the medium pace of Daryl Mitchell. Coming in at No 4 after 13 overs, he had plenty of time to compile a big score. But yet another failure meant his score sequence for the tour was 6, 11, 15 and 10. Pant’s lack of runs has revived the debate about his place in the white-ball team and the non-inclusion of Sanju Samson. As soon as Pant got out in Christchurch, social media was flooded with outrage about the team’s decision to keep the Kerala keeper-batsman on the sidelines.

Earlier on this tour, Samson had got support from former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull. “Rishabh Pant’s record is a decent sample size. He has played just under 30 games and only averages 35, the strike-rate is good. But Sanju in 11 games is averaging 60-something. And I don’t think he is any less of a wicketkeeper. I just think he deserves an opportunity as well,” Doull had told Cricbuzz.(read more)
