India announced their 12-man team for the opening match on the tour of Australia with no place for Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar and Umesh Yadav. India have employed this strategy of revealing a 12-man squad a day prior to a game starting from series against West Indies and have continued that in Australia.
The team will be led by Virat Kohli who had sat out the T20s with Windies in order to rest himself for the two month tour of Australia which will see India play three T20Is, four Tests and three ODIs and culminates on January 18, 2019. Rohit Sharma is the vice-captain with Rishabh Pant the wicket-keeper ahead of Dinesh Karthik. DK had donned the gloves in the series against Windies but is also in line to play in Brisbane.
This move could be in line with the plan that was set in motion when MS Dhoni was rested from both the Windies and Australia’s T20I series. Chief selector MSK Prasad had then said: “The T20Is here [against Windies] and in Australia, he [Dhoni] is not going to play, because we are also looking at a second wicketkeeper. That will be between Rishabh and Dinesh Karthik. So they will be getting a chance to keep and bat.”
With Brisbane surface likely to offer bounce, India might play all three quicks at their disposal. In all likelihood, that’ll push Yuzvendra Chahal as the player on the bench.
“As a whole, throughout the tour we want to do the little things right and have our focus really precise so that we can win more situations than the opposition,” said Kohli during the press conference leading up to the series opener at The Gabba in Brisbane.
India’s 12-man squad for first T20I: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, Yuzvendra Chahal.
