Three days after the demise of former finance minister Arun Jaitley, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) on Tuesday announced that it will rechristen Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as Arun Jaitley Stadium in his memory. However, the ground will continue to be called Feroz Shah Kotla.

As per a report in PTI, the renaming will take place on September 12, the same day when a stand will be named after India captain Virat Kohli as announced earlier.

“It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud,” said DDCA president Rajat Sharma on this initiative.

However, Sharma tweeted that the name of the ground will continue to be Ferozeshah Kotla.

During his tenure as DDCA president, Jaitley had developed the infrastructure and added modern facilities at the stadium, which included increasing its capacity to accommodate more fans and constructing world class dressing rooms.

The function will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and it will be graced by the presence of former Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju.

East Delhi BJP MP and former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has also requested Lt-Governor Anil Baijal to rename the Yamuna Sports Complex in East Delhi after former finance minister Arun Jaitley.

In a letter addressed to the governor on August 24 he proposed to rename the complex in his constituency after the former finance minister in recognition of his contribution towards nation-building and his love for cricket.

“I am writing this letter to propose to your good self to rename Yamuna Sports Complex… in the name of eminent lawyer, our great leader and former finance minister, late Arun Jaitley ji,” Gambhir’s letter reads.

A senior DDA official said the agency regularly holds meetings where it discusses recommendations for renaming its properties. “After getting clearances of all wings that have jurisdiction over the property… the DDA recommends the proposal to the Delhi government and the CM takes the final decision,” he said.

He said the person should be eminent and ought to have done social work: “Since Jaitley is a big name, there shouldn’t be any problem.”
