England vs Pakistan 1st Test Day 3 Highlights: 13 wickets fall in last two sessions

Stokes is brought back to have a go at the tail! And he does get the much-needed wicket. He bangs it into Shaheen Afridi, who is caught in a tangle and is caught at gully. Out for 2. Pakistan lose their 8th wicket. Mohammad Abbas comes out at 10 to face what must be tha last over of the day. PAK 137/8, lead by 244

Shaheen Afridi gets off the mark by clipping Broad off his pads for a couple of runs down to the leg side. With less than 10 minutes to go, England have gone to spin, perhaps in the hope of buying an extra over and try to bowl Pakistan out today. Stokes's spell ends. Yasir Shah tries to attack Bess, but almost ends up giving a top edge. PAK 137/7 after 43, lead by 244

Yasir Shah rocks back and smashes on the leg side as ben Stokes goes short. Stokes follows up with a no ball. Afridi looks to be firm in defence - that's a line we never thought we'd say in a 100 years. There's a reason why Ben Stokes is the most highly rated cricket in the world at the moment! He strikes in his second over! Mohammad Rizwan is out lbw. He goes for 27. The ball stayed low on the batsman. Pakistan Reviewed, it was vital for them that they have one batsman in the middle in these dying minutes, but the on-field decision stays. Shadab takes Stokes on! Pulls with power, but misses. Stokes ends the over with a shouldering of the arms from Rizwan. Broad brought back into the attack from the other end. England want to end the day with a bang. A crucial half hour coming up. Shadab flicks him for a single. Rizwan offers a solid defence to Broad. PAK 119/5 after 38

Anderson goes for 10 runs in an over as Pakistan's lead keeps stretching. Shadab places it between the slips and gully to end the over. There is a lot of excitement in the comm box over Stokes being seen bowling. A drinks break is taken, signalling that half an hour more is left in the day. And it is time for Stokes finally! Shadab Khan has come out at 7. Joins Rizwan with Pakistan needing a bit of resistance till the end of the day. A bit of a mix-up but Rizwan sends him back with a loud call. Ben Stokes was seeing loosening up during that over but he has been held off for now after that wicket. Bess continues. Stokes, Root, Broad, Bess have a long conversation, Archer comes up to have a word and is given a shake-up by Broad. Rizwan keeps attacking. Shadab picks up a short ball and crashes it into deep midwicket for four. PAK 106/5 after 35

Rizwan starts off the 34th over from Anderson in attacking mode, driving him down the ground for four. But there is a wicket against the run of play in the over. A direct hit from the infield by Sibley! And England ask for the wicket! And replays give them the wicket. Asad Shafiq, so unfortunately, is run out for 29 off 43 balls. England get their 5th wicket. Both batsman go for their shots against Bess. Shafiq attacks him against the spin and gets three runs on the off side. Rizwan times one a little more and gets two. Rizwan slaps the spinner through third man for another three runs. Buttler drops another catch - it looked like there was an inside edge - but replays show there wasn't, luckily for the under-fire keeper. Asad Shafiq sweeps Bess for four to start the 33rd over. Rizwan sweeps Bess firmly for four down to fine leg. And then there is another poor effort in the field from England, Broad the culprit this time. Cries of 'Catch' but Broad does not make a good effort to get to the ball. Anderson and Stokes have dropped catches this session already. James Anderson back into the attack to bowl the 30th over. Asad Shafiq cuts with conviction and James Anderson fluffs a difficult chance at backward point. A tough chance but that is a missed chance. Woakes is the one making things happen in this final session, another chance off his bowling. Rizwan looks to be busy in his crease. Wasim Akram says Rizwan got a 100 in a warm-up match in England this last month. Some concern for England as Archer takes a tumble in the outfield and takes time to get up. PAK 69/4 after 27

Azhar Ali is out. Woakes strikes again. The captain is gone for 18. Reverse swing does the trick for Woakes. Azhar Ali was playing forward and didn;t bother Reviewing after being caught plumb. Rizwan comes out at 6 with Pakistan in a spot of bother. PAK 64/4 after 25

Bess bowls too far down leg and Asad Shafiq smashes him for four to fine leg. It has been a fluent start for Pakistan's Number 5. A drinks break is taken. A lot of time left on Day 3 still though. With an extra half hour allowed today, we are supposed to have 30 overs remaining today. Not all of those will be bowled, but with bright sunlight, we can be sure to have at least another 20. Woakes continues to bowl after the break. Wasim Akram says in the comm box Pakistan need another 100 runs or so to be posting a winning total. Atherton says what England will be thinking about is that Pakistan have a long tail and that another two wickets today will keep them in the fight. PAK 63/3 

'A Fab 5' innings from Babar Azam, says a barb on Twitter. Pakistan losing their two first innings heroes for 0 and 5 will put them under pressure here. Azhar Ali needs to play a captain's knock. Asad Shafiq gets off the mark with a push away towards fine leg for two. And he crashes Chris Woakes through the on side for four runs in the nest over. PAK 58/3 after 22

Archer is bowling quite a few effort balls, but without reward so far. With Bess bowling well at one end, will England be feeling the absence of a second spinner? Questions around Ben Stokes too? Whether he can bowl in the second innings? England need someone to make things happen at the moment. Azhar Ali gets some fluency going with a couple of drives against Archer. Babar Azam is sent to the ground by an Archer bouncer. Chris Woakes, in a move that surprises Shane Warne, replaces Bess. 'Maybe he's going to switch ends,' Warne says hopefully. PAK 48/2

Azhar Ali gets a fortunate boundary off Archer. Thick outside edge runs through the slip cordon. Babar Azam works with Bess's spin through backward square to get off the mark. Archer has kept it tight in his opening spell but the pitch has offered less help to outright pace bowlers so far. Babar Azam ends the over with a couple of runs run down past point. A mix-up between Abid Ali and Azhar Ali in running between the wickets, with Nasser Hussain reminiscing about the perils of running your captain out in the comm box. Dom Bess is brought into the attack in the 14th over, that's a relatively early introduction of spin by Root. Azhar Ali, after spurting into life with two consecutive boundaries, has again not scored another run since then. But it's Bess who has an instant impact! Abid Ali has been caught as he gets a top edge. England get something going their way at last! PAK 33/2 after 14

The Pakistan captain will heave a sigh of relief as he gets his first runs of the series. And he gets them with consecutive fours - the first driven past the bowler and the second driven through covers. Pakistan are away in the last session of the day. Archer replaces Anderson in the 11th over to bowl from the Anderson end, Anderson trots off to fine leg. Abid Ali cuts for a single in that over for the only run. PAK 29/1 after 11

All set for the last session of Day 3. Has to be said, the match can be won and lost in this next session. If England can rattle this batting order they can go into the final two days with shout of getting back. Pakistan, if they can get their lead across 200 without losing more than a wicket or two, will be running away with this match. Broad begins the 10th over. Azhar Ali, still on a pair, faces, tries to get that elusive single for him. 

James Anderson to bowl what will be the last over before Tea. And his mood is not brightened with how Abid Ali starts the over - with a crash through the off side for four. Almost draws Abid Ali into offering the outside edge later in the over. Broad has conceded just 2 runs in his opening spell so far. Anderson has gone for more, but he was denied a wicket when Stokes dropped a catch at slip. Pakistan reach 20/2 at Tea, leading by 127 runs

Stokes drops Abid Ali at slip. Nothing going right for England. And Abid Ali ends the over with a crashing shot on the off side to rub salt into Anderson's wounds. Anderson kicks the turf as he grabs his cap from the umpire. 8 runs come off the over. Azhar Ali, still looking to hang in there more than anything else, survives another over from Broad. Anderson keeps the pressure going with some quality swing bowling. Azhar Ali, in at 3, is still looking to get his first runs of the Test. He edges! But the ball drops short of Root in the slips. Root has hurt his finger with that though. He is going off the field. Stokes to be acting captain. Broad almost got a second there. Broad, honing in on the pads, is proving to be a difficult customer at the moment. PAK 8/1 after 4

Anderson starts with a maiden. Stuart Broad bowls from the other end. Abid Ali, Masood's opening partner, scores the first run of the second innings with a slight push for a single. The first boundary comes in a slightly unconventional way - via four byes via a scuttled collection by Jos Buttler. More pressure for the England keeper. But he makes up off the last ball of the over! Shan Masood, first innings hero, is gone for a duck. Broad takes the wicket, Buttler takes the catch. PAK 6/1 after 2

A lead of 107. Around 40 minutes left till the Tea break. Pakistan on top at the moment. Can the tide turn in Manchester in this second innings? Ben Stokes seen having some animated words in the team huddle as the teams enter. Might Stokes be fit enough to bowl in the 2nd innings? Anderson begins. Masood faces.

That's it. That's the 10th wicket. Shadab Khan makes up for the missed catch by catching Anderson plumb lbw. Broad stays not out on 29 from 25 balls - need a batting promotion for him soon - as England are dismissed for 219. Pakistan get a lead of 107 runs in the first innings.

Stuart Broad has undergone some sort of a transformation in the pandemic! He must be seeing the ball like it is a football now. Sweeps with power against Yasir Shah. Clears the fielder at deep midwicket as well as the ropes. Six! Follows it with another slog. That goes straight to the fielder, Shadab Khan, who drops the catch. Chance fluffed! Yasir denied his 5th wicket.

Jimmy Anderson is drawn forward by a Shadab Khan googly straight up. And reverse sweeps Yasir Shah for four in the next over! England's No 10 and No 11 have shown some signs of fight - with an extravagant touch from time to time - over the last month. England cross 200 with that shot. Shadab Khan continues at the other end. Sky Sports shows a montage of collections by Rizwan in this Test, contrasting it with Dowrich's misfortunes in the West Indies series. Rizwan has done brilliantly to deal with the wobble of the Dukes ball so far.Pakistan appealing for everything now. Shadab Khan strikes! Jofra Archer has gloved it through to the keeper. A ripper of a delivery from Shadab. A ripper of a catch from Rizwan, standing up to the stumps. England lose their 9th. Anderson joins Broad, with England still trailing by 129 runs

With both Broad and Archer having swings at everything, Pakistan bring on Shadab Khan for the first time in the match in place of Shaheen. Spin from both ends as the visitors look to force an error. Archer swats him through the covers for four. Pakistan review for a Caught behind appeal against Archer but do not get it going their way. This 9th wicket pair is adding some mischevious runs for England. ENG 195/8 after 66

Shaheen Afridi comes into the attack in place of Naseem Shah with Broad having joined Archer. England still a long way from safety. But then Broad makes his presence felt. Four, four, four to end the over. 12 runs comes off the over. Shaheen Afridi goes for an overpitched length and Broad gets runs against him. Two inside edges for four, but the last one was a confident whack over extra cover. Yasir Shah, at the other end, is looking for a 5-wicket haul. Archer with some mighty heaves of the bat against Yasir. Attacking approaches all round. ENG 187/8 after 64

Naseem Shah is making the batsmen look very tentative. Woakes goes for a run which is not there and bruises his elbow in diving back into the crease as Yasir Shah throws and misses the stump by a fraction. Direct hit and that would have been an 8th wicket. Woakes looks to be in some discomfort due to that elbow. And he is OUT in the next over! Naseem Shah vs Jofra Archer. That is the contest on view at the moment. Archer had some interesting comments to make on Naseem before Day 3. Two of the fastest bowlers in world cricket at the moment facing up to each other. Naseem has the better of that initial exchange but Archer shows good application to block as well. Yasir Shah strikes again! Bess gets a big outside edge. Asad Shafiq takes a flying catch at slip. Bess goes for 1. Yasir has now struck twice after Lunch. Archer joins Woakes. ENG 164/7 after 58

A period of sustained pressure follows the Buttler wicket. Naseem Shah gets an lbw appeal against Woakes. Yasir Shah also causes a few flutters with a lot of bounce and turn. In an unusual sight for Manchester (given by what we have seen over the last month) there is bright sunlight and clear blue skies! ENG 161/6 after 56

Yasir Shah cleans up Buttler! Pakistan strike right after Lunch. England lose their big wicket. Buttler goes for 38. England now 159/6 Buttler, after having done so well to defend for so long, leaves a big gap between bat and pad and Yasir Shah goes through. Bess comes out to join Woakes. Archer, Broad and Anderson the only ones left after this.

Naseem Shah starts off proceedings after Lunch. Woakes, on 15, who took a knock earlier, and Buttler, 38, walk out to resume the England innings. And Naseem Shah subjects Woakes to a stiff examination in the first over after the restart. Good angles from the bowler and one very lucky slash-and-miss from Woakes. 

England added 62 runs for the loss of one wicket in the first session on Day 3. Like both the previous days, the home team have given a good display in the morning session. Abbas was on the money today as well, conceding 1 runs in a 7-over spell at one point. Naseem Shah claimed the wicket of Pope. That leaves Buttler and the England lower order with a task on their hand. Still trail by 167 runs, but a long way from the nightmare they had found themselves in at 12/3 yesterday.

Sarfaraz was first seen carrying a pair of shoes for Shadab Khan after Mohammad Rizwan’s dismissal on Day 2 and later water bottles for his teammates, as the visitors held a firm grip on the proceedings. However, the incident brought strong criticism against the team management, with former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar terming it disrespectful. (READ MORE)

It stopped raining and play resumes in Manchester but only for a short while. Lunch has been announced. ENG are 159/5 after 52 overs. That has been a good session of cricket. Pakistan claimed Pope's wicket but Woakes (15*) and Buttler (38*) look to build a partnership.

It has started to rain in Manchester. Play has been stopped as the covers come on. Buttler battling hard: 29 (89) Woakes: 7 (7). ENG are 141/5 after 47.2 overs

Chris Woakes takes a thumping blow on the head as he ducks into a Naseem Shah bouncer, and England's sub fielders bring out not just a selection of helmets but a whole kitbag.

Naseem Shah's outstanding bowling gives Pakistan the much-needed breakthrough as Ollie Pope departs for 62 after completing 50-run partnership with Buttler. Woakes comes to the crease. ENG are 127/5 after 45 overs.

A patient first hour of the day brings up 50-run partnership between Pope and Buttler, who has only really attacked the ball when it's been very full in this innings, defending and leaving when the Pakistan bowlers have been more on a good length in the channel. ENG are 115/4 after 43 overs.

Drinks are on the field after an hour of Test cricket. Not much to reflect on the scoreboard so far. Pope brought up his half-century and is about to complete a 50-run partnership wiith Buttler at the crease. Pakistan continue their search for wicket.

Pope presses on with Buttler after passing fifty. The hosts are relying heavily on their partnership. Pope faces some intense balling. Mohammad Abbas is bowling superbly. He's brought a miss or an edge with 23% of his deliveries, swinging the ball more than last night (0.5 degrees v 0.2 degrees), seaming it just as much. England are 106/4 after 39 overs.

Ollie Pope brings up his fifth Test half-century in a total of 11 Tests. His 50 comes at a very crucial point of the Test and he celebrates it by raising his bat, only to realise there is no crowd. He turns to the dressing room instead.

The current session is very critical for both the teams. Pakistan have allowed only two runs, both taken by Pope, in the first four overs of the day. Pak are looking for a wicket. 

Day 3 of the first Test kickstarts in Manchester. England have a difficult task ahead as they trail the tourists by 234 runs. Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler at the crease, Shaheen on the attack. 

According to forecast, the weather is promising and we can see a full game today. England have a lot of damage work to do. They're 92/4 in reply to Pakistan's 326 & will be facing a stern challenge from the tourist's skilled attack.

Ben Stokes was batting almost a foot outside of his crease on the second day of the 1st Test to negate the possibility of being caught lbw by Pakistan’s seam bowlers, but left a huge gap to be bowled out as a result. The man who got his wicket was Mohammad Abbas, the 30-year-old who could turn out to be Pakistan’s ace in the pack in this series. (READ MORE)

Masood hit a career-best 156 off 319 balls to become the sixth Pakistan Test cricketer to score three centuries in successive innings. With this feat, Masood joins a league of legends, all of whom have achieved the same record– Zaheer Abbas, Mudassar Nazar, Mohammad Yousaf, Younis Khan, and Misbah-ul- Haq. (STATS)

Thrilling as the pacers were towards the end of the second evening, it was the slow riffs of Masood that made the day Pakistan’s. Barring the backend of his 470-minute marathon, when he threw caution to the wind, he was a model of restraint, eschewing risks and indulgences, embodying the dying art of slow, patient batting.
