Joe Root has been rested by England for the one-off Twenty20 international and the five-match ODI series against Australia after playing a starring role in the Ashes series.
Six members of the Ashes-winning squad – spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, allrounder Ben Stokes and pace bowlers Steven Finn and Mark Wood – were named in the 14-man ODI squad.
Uncapped paceman Reece Topley was selected in the 13-man T20 squad. Eoin Morgan will be England’s captain in both formats.
Root, who was man of the series as England regained the Ashes by winning the test series 3-2, has been an ever-present in England squads in all formats in recent years.
National selector James Whitaker says “this is primarily a young group of players and the next three weeks will provide them with valuable experience.”
