England vs New Zealand (ENG vs NZ) 1st Test Highlights:

23:38 (IST)05 Jun 2021
New Zealand lead by 165 runs at stumps

Latham (30*) and night-watchman Wagner (2*) finish the day scoring four runs in the final five overs of the fourth day. Robinson stole the headlines for England again with two vital wickets of Conway (23) and Williamson (1). NZ: 62/2, lead by 165 runs.

23:15 (IST)05 Jun 2021
England scalp two towards the end

Williamson is sent back by Robinson. A seam-in delivery down the slope to find the front knee roll. LBW! NZ: 58/2 (25 overs)

22:40 (IST)05 Jun 2021

And there's the breakthrough! After a resolute start by the visitors, Robinson ruins the party. 223 runs late, 410 balls late, but England finally find a way to get through Conway (23). The ball takes the edge and knocks out the off-stump. On comes Kane!

NZ: 39/1 (18.2 overs)

22:16 (IST)05 Jun 2021
Conway, Latham keep England out

Robinson and Wood have taken over from Anderson and Broad, with Conway and Latham still keeping everything out. As the ball gets softer, the going is bound to get easier for the Kiwis, but their openers are making sure they keep their heads, and their wickets, in this early stage of the innings. New Zealand look content to let this match veer to a draw, given the 2nd Test at Edgbaston and the WTC final to come.

First boundary of innings, England continue burning Reviews

England use up yet another Review. They're not having a good day with these. Anderson gets Root to go upstairs again with an LBW shout against Conway, still nothing doing for the third umpire. Conway hits the first boundary of the innings... in the 10th over.

England use two Reviews

England take a LBW Review against Latham but lose it, with Anderson generating good movement in the air. Review stays because of umpire's call. Next ball, as Broad continues, England take another Review for caught behind - and lose this one too. Not much happening in terms of the scoreboard, but England have ended losing two Reviews in 5 overs.

Final session: New Zealand 2nd innings begins

Conway and Latham walk out to begin New Zealand's 2nd innings. A lead of 103 to build upon. James Anderson and Stuart Broad take the new ball for England.

20:57 (IST)05 Jun 2021
England all out, Burns falls for 132

Burns plays a slog sweep for six, Wagner being hit for a few runs in this session. Anderson slams Santner for a four. And then the innings ends, Burns's wicket brings it about. Southee gets his sixth wicket as Burns is caught behind for 132. England are all out for 275 and Tea is taken. New Zealand's 2nd innings will start in the final session of the day. They are leading by 103 runs.

Eventful 10th wicket partnership livens up session as Tea approaches

Anderson charges! Dances down the track to Wagner, and obviously misses. Smiles from both Wagner and Anderson. Lord's bursts in applause as Anderson drills the off side gap and takes a run ... and gets back for two! Wagner steams in with what looks like centuries of injustice. Anderson blocks. Thrilling stuff! And to add to the entertainment, it's Kane Williamson who will bowl now. Ah, the beauty of a Test match veering to a draw into the 4th day. Williamson starts with a wide. Burns tries a reverse sweep. Misses. The ball goes through everybody. Everything happening in this 10th wicket partnership. Burns on 124.

Burns into crash-and-burn mode after 100

Burns into slash mode now, letting Anderson face not more than a couple of balls every over. Anderson doing his best to block, much to the crowd's enjoyment. Burns pulls Jamieson for four now, his smile showing how much he is enjoying being out there at the moment. He is turning down singles if there are more than 2 balls remaining in the over. Let us see how far the war-waging Burns and the tail-wagging Anderson stretch this innings. Tea approaches. Consecutive fours for Burns to end an over, meaning Anderson will have to face the next over.

ENG 251/9

20:09 (IST)05 Jun 2021
100 for Rory Burns

Big cheers as Burns gets to 97 with a slashed four. Huge cheers round Lord's as Anderson plays a backward defence stroke against Jamieson to survive the over. Burns gets to his century, his 3rd Test ton, with a double.

ENG 232/9

20:03 (IST)05 Jun 2021
Broad hits second six of Test and then departs

Six! And it's Broad! Pulls a short ball from Wagner as the entertainment just keeps getting better and better. This is the only second six of the Test, the only other time was when Conway reached his 200 with a six. Wagner has the last ball laugh, deceives Broad with the full ball and gets it through his defence. Broad's cameo ends at 10. Anderson joins Burns, on 91.

ENG 223/9

19:49 (IST)05 Jun 2021
Burns dropped on 88

Broad, though having elicited an LBW appeal off his first ball, looks intent to get set in. Plays five dot balls and takes a single off the last ball of Southee's over. Burns waits patiently in his 80s. Broad pulls! Ah, a sight for sore eyes. Burns gets a life! Southee drops a catch at second slip. Burns dropped on 88.

ENG 214/8

Tailender time

England's Number 9 Mark Wood also departs without troubling the scorers - the third duck in the innings. Gets an inside edge off Jamieson to go through to Watling. Tailender time... who do England throw into the fire first, Anderson or Broad? Broad it is, probably encouraged by his batting heroics against West Indies last year. Burns, doing a Conway, on 86 at the other end.

Five-wicket haul for Southee

Southee gets a 5th! First Conway, now Southee - two Kiwis have gotten themselves onto the Lord's honours board this match. Ollie Robinson pulls a short ball from Southee and is caught at fine leg. He departs for 41, his knock a vital one for England in their struggle. Rory Burns faces the next ball, and is smashed on the helmet by another Southee short ball. The heat is on England!

ENG 203/7

18:54 (IST)05 Jun 2021
2nd new ball brings back Southee

Robinson slashes another four past point, as England look a play a little more freely with the axe hanging over their head gone now. Wagner is hit for another boundary by Robinson as he strays on the off side. Tim Southee is back on the field and straightaway back into the attack as the second new ball is taken at 80 overs.

ENG 194/6

18:42 (IST)05 Jun 2021
England stave off follow-on threat

The bite-less CdG is replaced by Santner (Southee has gone off the field) even as Wagner threatens from the other end. Robinson and Burns taking no chances for now. Santner getting some sharp turn. England would be ruing not taking a spinner... but they do manage to get to 180, thus avoiding the prospect of a follow-on.

18:15 (IST)05 Jun 2021
Play resumes with England boundary

Play resumes with CdG taking the ball for New Zealand, with Wagner at the other end. Robinson pounces on a loosener from CdG to swat a boundary past point. Into single digits now, the danger mark.

Lunch - England 15 runs away from follow-on mark

Given him! Santner, given the ball for what surely will be only the one over before Lunch, gets a wicket! Ollie Robinson was given caught as short leg claimed a catch. The Review shows there was no bat and the decision is reversed. Umpire Michael Gough makes his second error of the day. And Lunch is taken, England trailing by 214 runs, 15 runs away from staving off the follow on threat. Burns (72*) still unbeaten even as New Zealand have claimed wicket after wicket at the other end this morning. Ollie Robinson (16*) their last recognized batsman still hanging in there with Burns.

ENG trail by 214 runs at Lunch with 4 wickets in hand

England sustain pressure with Lunch approaching

Apart from one top edge by Robinson that somehow went over first slip, there has been no boundary hit for the last 17 overs. Wagner and Jamieson continue bowing in tandem. Still no Santner, another candidate to be dropping out for when Boult returns. England still 17 runs away from avoiding the follow-on, but this partnership, now worth 22 off 64 balls, has seemingly staved off the immediate danger.
