Gharami was batting on 139 while Shahbaz Ahmed was on 45 not out at Tea having batted through the entire second session of the first day to take East Zone to 270-5 at Tea. East Zone had reached 138/5 at lunch with captain Ishan Kishan departing for four off nine balls. East Zone had lost openers Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran with just 25 runs on board. Teenage phenom Sooryavanshi had the chance to enhance his First-Class credentials at the Centre of Excellence, but managed to score just eight runs after facing six balls. Before today’s game, the 15-year-old T20 sensation had played 12 innings for Bihar over eight First-Class games. In these games he had top-scored with 93 and has an average of 17+, which pales in comparison to his T20 stats.
In the other Duleep Trophy quarter-final, North Zone were batting on 114/2 in 32.0 overs at lunch, with Ayush Doseja on 27 and Ayush Badoni on 50.
For Sooryavanshi, an untested commodity in the red-ball arena, the Duleep Trophy game against North East Zone is an opportunity to get his eye in for some First-Class cricket before he faces the more established teams like Central or South Zone at the same venue from August 30. The selectors have also raised the stakes by entrusting the young Sooryavanshi with vice-captaincy of the team.

In West Zone's batting so far, opener Prithvi Shaw was dismissed for a quickfire 21-ball 22 leaving Harvik Desai and Musheer Khan to take matters into their own hands.
Shahbaz Ahmed nears his century! Slaps a loose ball over the ropes for a six despite there being three boundary riders. That six helps Shahbaz Ahmed jump from 87 to 93. he's just seven runs away from what would be a memorable century.

North East Zone have the big wicket! Pheiroijam Jotin Singh sends back top scorer Gharami! Gharami missed the line of the ball and the ball thudded into his pads. the umpire hesitated for a bit before raising his finger!
Pheiroijam Jotin Singh has his third wicket, and all three wickets have been crucial. First he got opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, then captain Ishan Kishan and now top scorer Gharami! After North East Zone were unable to get a single wicket in the second session, they have their sixth wicket of the day.

What a partnership from Sudip Gharami and Shahbaz Ahmed who have batted through an entire session without dropping a wicket!
East Zone were 138/5 in 29.3 overs at Lunch with Gharami batting on 54 and Ishan Kishan just departing. Now at Tea, they are 270/5 in 58.0 overs (SK Gharami 139, Shahbaz Ahmed 45).
What an innings from Sudip Gharami, who has scored 100 off 131 balls with a strike rate of 76.3. He was helped with a dropped catch from Joseph Lalthankhuma in the middle of that innings. But has managed to be a part of both the big partnerships that East Zone have managed this innings.
This is his ninth century of his first class career (he also has 10 half centuriess)
The second session has been a slow burn so far, with Gharami and Shahbaz throwing down anchor and resisting the temptation on hitting the ball around. Their partnership is 38 runs off 73 balls. East Zone have lacked partnerships, barring the 92-run partnership (off 114 balls) between Gharami and Kumar Kushagra.

Ishan Kishan so far has looked good from the first ball itself, slapping away his first ball to the ropes for a four.
Another quick wicket for North East Zone! This time the East Zone skipper Ishan Kishan will walk out to bat to replace Virat Singh, who scored two runs in the seven balls he faced.
No foot movement from Virat, and the ball nicks the edge of the bat and flies to the fielder at first slip who happens to be captain Rongsen Jonathan. Rongsen managed to hold on despite the flying specter of wicketkeeper Arpit Subash Bhatewara diving in front of him trying to catch the ball.

A 92-run partnership (off 114 balls) between Gharami (39 runs from 56 balls in the partnership) and Kumar Kushagra (53 runs off 58 balls in the partnership) comes to an end.

Pacer Akash Choudhary who is brought back on for a second spell after a great first stint of five overs, is down with what looks like a calf injury in just two balls. the physio comes rushing out and we have a hold-up.

North East Zone had East Zone on the mat after the first 10 overs with the pitch and conditions aiding pacers. East Zone had lost two of their top batters including vice captain Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with 25 runs on board. But then, North East Zone captain Rongsen Jonathan introduced spinners from the 11th over which was a puzzling decision considering the carry and swing that the pacers were getting, particularly Akash Choudhary and Bishworjit Konthoujam.
Should Rongsen Jonathan have persisted with their pacers longer?
Stellar batting from the two East Zone batters, Kumar Kushagra and Sudip Kumar Gharami. At the drinks break, both batters are in the middle having scored identical 25 off 35 balls.
East Zone are 73/2 after 16 overs after suffering two early blows in the form of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran.
So after losing two quick wickets, East Zone batters Kumar Kushagra and Sudip Kumar Gharami have managed to guide East Zone past the 50-run mark in the 11th over.

It takes Sooryavanshi three balls to get off the mark! He starts off with a boundary, a backfoot punch to the ropes on the legside! And the next ball is drives to the offside for another four!

There was a boundary in there, but Easwaran will not be happy. It was the kind of shot that nudged the North East side to add a third slip fielder.

One of the reasons for bowling first according to North East Zone captain Jonathan Rongsen was that it was a very windy.
Ishan Kishan said that he also would have picked bowling first if he had win the toss. "Won't be easy to bat first on these conditions," he said.
TOSS UPDATE FROM CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE: North East Zone have won the toss and have opted to field. This means an early sighting of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi batting.
“When it comes to T20s, he got an opportunity to play a lot of white-ball matches. In white-ball cricket, because he was able to score quickly, he was able to get into the Indian team quickly, but when it comes to making it to India’s Test team there is plenty to travel for Sooryavanshi,” Manish Ojha, who is Sooryavanshi’s childhood coach, tells The Indian Express.
Having coached Sooryavanshi from the start, Ojha knows the batsman inside out.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Duleep Trophy. Today we have East Zone facing the severely-inexperienced North East Zone in the quarterfinal. Top players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan and Mohd Shami will be in action.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi returns to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE), the place where his destiny changed.
During the 2024 off-season, the junior selection panel, then headed by Tilak Naidu were short-listing players for a camp with an eye on the 2026 Under-19 World Cup. Naidu & his team were in two minds, given that Sooryavanshi was just 13 years old. But BCCI’s head of cricket VVS Laxman gave his approval. Sooryavanshi would join the camp and by September that year would hit a century in a Youth Test against Australia in Chennai.
It is exactly two years since Sooryavanshi turned up for that camp at the CoE. On Sunday when he walks out for East Zone in the first round fixture of the Duleep Trophy against North East Zone, he will do so as a completely different player. He has won the Under-19 World Cup. Has set the IPL stage on fire in successive seasons. He is already the youngest ever Indian to make an international T20 debut. In the IPL, there is no reputed bowler he hasn’t taken down.
