The DDCA executive committee has put the captaincy issue at rest by officially naming former India opener Gautam Gambhir as skipper for the 2015-16 season. But as far as appointing the chief coach is concerned, the debate is still on.
While the executive committee has already zeroed in on former India player Ajay Jadeja as chief coach, the sports working committee, however, is keen on proposing last year’s coach Vijay Dahiya’s name for the position.
Even though the sports working committee is yet to finalise the proposal, which they are expected to do at a meeting on Sunday at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium, before sending it for approval to the executive committee, the executive committee confirmed that Jadeja’s name has been finalised as the chief coach and that the decision is irrevocable.
“There is no way that Vijay Dahiya can now be picked as the chief coach of Delhi because the decision on Jadeja was taken when the sports working committee elections were on hold.”
“So, at that time, we had a resolution among the executive body which was to hand over the team’s rein to Jadeja. And since the decision making power rests with the executive body, we have decided to abide by that decision. And as far as proposals by the SWC are concerned, we will be setting up a panel which will sit with the convener and finalise the coaches and managers relating to the DDCA’s age-group sides,” said Ashoke Sharma, an executive committee member.
On the other hand, SWC co-convener Naresh Sharma said there could be a possibility of DDCA retaining both Jadeja and Dahiya as coaches.
“We are sticking with Dahiya as our coach, but with Jadeja coming to the practice, the executive committee can probably decide if they want to retain him as their chief coach or the state coach. But as far as the Ranji Trophy is concerned, Dahiya will remain the coach.
Jadeja can become the overall coach where he will be required to submit reports on players of all age-groups and oversee the coaching at the DDCA,” Naresh Sharma said on Saturday.
With the sports working committee and the executive committee making their views clear, there could be a likeliness wherein both Jadeja and Dahiya could be seen working together at the DDCA.
