CSK vs SRH Highlights, IPL 2024: Tushar Deshpande claims a 4-fer as CSK trump SRH by 78 runs

Pick of the bowlers for Chennai, Tushar Deshpande back into the attack. And he gets another one. A 4-fer! Pat Cummins the latest to bite the dust. Looking to slog a fuller-length delivery, the SRH skipper is holed at long-on. Eight wickets down!

Shardul Thakur into his fourth over. Pitches one full and wide outside off and Abdul Samad has a swing at it. Caught at long-off by the substitute fielder, Sameer Rizvi. SRH lose a seventh wicket.

Skipper Pat Cummins is the new man in. Carves out a boundary through the point region for FOUR. 124/7 after 17 overs.

Pathirana back into the attack. Klaasen on strike. Starts off with a slower bouncer, and the Proteas rushes into a pull to only collect a single. Follows it up with a slot ball that is hammered over long-on for SIX. 

Later in the over, with his strike rate struggling at 100 after a 20-ball outing, Klaasen gets holed at long on off a low full toss. Not a trademark outing from the Proteas tonight. SRH lose their sixth wicket.

Tushar Bhaduri: One has seen that before in this before in this IPL. A toe-crushing yorker taking middle-stump out of the ground. If it's not Jasprit Bumrah, it has to be Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan had shown it against Delhi Capitals as two such deliveries left Mitchell Marsh and Tristan Stubbs almost as spectators. On Sunday at Chepauk, it was the turn of Aiden Markram. The South African had been batting for some time but seemed powerless to intercept a swinging exocet aimed at his stumps from a slinging action. The speed was 147kmph and it was deadly accurate as Masrkram tried to force the pace. Pathirana's job is to shut the batting team in the second half of an innings and Sunrisers Hyderabad were the latest team to come unstuck against him. The visitors were already behind the eight-ball and despite the bowlers having an unenviable job this IPL, sometimes they are just too good for the batting marauders.

After 15 overs, Sunrisers are 109/5.

Jadeja to close his quota for the night. Another economical over from the all-rounder - just the four runs off it. Been a typical spell from the left-arm orthodox. Quick to get through the overs, putting a halt on the boundaries, and a wicket. 106/5 after 14 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja from the other end. Klaasen peels off a first maximum for himself. Slot ball, launched over long-off for SIX!

Meanwhile, Abdul Samad gets a boundary off Shardul Thakur. Slapped through extra cover for four. 100 up for the Sunrisers. 102/5 after 13 overs.

135 needed off the final 10 overs. Matheesha Pathirana introduced into the attack. A couple of wides in the over but it's a productive one for the Chennai Super Kings. Pathirana cleans up Aiden Markram with a 147KPH yorker nailed to perfection. The middle stump is uprooted. Half of the SRH batting is back in the hut with more than half the runs in this chase yet to be made. Abdul Samad is the new batter in. The required rate rises to more than 14.

Mustafizur Rahman into his second over. A good mix up of slower ones from the left-armer to keep the required rate rising. Just the five runs from the 10th over. Heinrich Klaasen is the new batter in. Lot of onus on this partnership. At the halfway stage, SRH are 78/4.

Ravindra Jadeja into his second over. Nitish Reddy on the strike. Bowls almost a bouncer - that rises to an awkward height against Reddy - and it induces a thick top-edge and MS Dhoni claims onto it. A fourth wicket for the Super Kings. 73/4 after nine overs.

Just the one boundary following the end of the powerplay in the first two overs. That too off a poorly pitched delivery from Shardul Thakur, picking a thick under edge off Aiden Markram. He's the key in this partnership with Nitish Reddy. 70/3 after eight overs.

Mustafizur replaces Deshpande to bowl the final over of the powerplay. Markram looks to execute a drive off an angling away delivery but catches a thick edge that runs through backward point for four. 50 up at the end of the fifth over. 53/3 after six overs.

Chahar into his third over in the powerplay. Much better from Cherry, as he is so referred to by his teammates - an apt nickname given the movement he generates. Nitish Reddy is the new man in. SRH wouldn't want to go down in a haste as they did against RCB the other night. Perhaps a partnership in the brewing from here until the halfway stage? 

Tushar Deshpande to Abhishek Sharma. The southpaw gets a slap shot down the ground for four. But just when SRH thought they've got the recovery done after those twin blows, another one bites the dust. Abhishek lured into slashing a slower ball and Daryl Mitchell takes another catch. A third wicket for Chennai in the powerplay. SRH are 42/3.

A couple of quick wickets and SRH have been put on the backfoot. Just like the last game. Will they change their approach. Aiden Markram isn't. Secures consecutive boundaries in Deepak Chahar's second over. First, a short of a length delivery punched wide of cover-point. Then, a cut shot over backward point off an even shorter delivery. 12 runs from the over. 33/2 after three overs.

Tushar Deshpande scampers in from the other end. And Head is quick to unsettle him, a full delivery, flicked over deep square leg for the first six of the innings. Abhishek Sharma joins in on the act with his first boundary of the night, a six over deep mid wicket. But Deshpande has the last laugh. 

Back-to-back wickets for him as Travis Head goes for another aggressive shot outside off, it's that region which troubles him early in the innings. Daryl Mitchell takes the catch. New batter in is Anmolpreet Singh, who lobs it straight to extra cover off his first delivery. SRH are 21/2.

Like SRH did with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, CSK have entrusted Deepak Chahar for the early bit of movement. He goes short and wide outside off straightaway against the left-handed Travis Head, who cuts it wide of point and cover-point for a first-ball four. Ominous enough? Seven from the first over.

Natarajan to close the innings for Hyderabad. Gaikwad on the strike - at 98. Starts off with a dot. And gets the wicket off the next one as Gaikwad finds Nitish Reddy. A nervous ninety for the CSK skipper to follow up on his hundred in Chennai's last home game. But the Chepauk crowd is roaring at it's best. This must be heart-breaking for the skipper. But not for those in the stands as one Mahendra Singh Dhoni comes in to bat.

Natarajan to Dhoni, a low full-toss on the stmps, Dhoni goes for the flick and it runs down deep square leg for four! Abhishek Sharma had a half chance at the fence there but the crowd doesn't care. A single off the next ball. Brings back Shivam Dube on the strike. Penultimate delivery of the innings, and it's been clobbered over deep mid wicket for SIX! Another low full toss this. Closes the innings with a single. CSK get to 212/3.

Tushar Bhaduri: With all the batting mayhem in the IPL over the last week or two, Chennai Super Kings' initial batting effort seemed a throwback to a bygone era. Especially with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane – two batsmen who are more classical than explosive in nature – opening the innings. One is used to watching the ball sail into the stands at least twice in an over during the Powerplay, but that's not how it started at the Chepauk on Sunday. A score of 50/1 after six overs would have been deemed acceptable a few years ago, but now it will be considered a job well done by the fielding side. Rahane seems a strange choice at the top of the order as CSK look to find their optimal combination going into the business end of the league campaign. Gaikwad was his calm self, scoring at a decent rate without seeming to hit a ball in anchor, but it was Daryl Mitchell who gave the team the desired impetus. CSK can't always leave it to MS Dhoni for coming in for the final two overs and hitting a few sixes, prompting ecstacy among the crowd.

Jaydev Unadkat to bowl the penultimate over. Shivam Dube goes for a pull shot straightaway but hasn't timed it that well. Falls safe by the deep square leg fence for a couple. One of the better overs this in the second half of the innings. Cummins had an opportunity to remove Gaikwad, sloppy work from the skipper inside the circle. Eight from the over. 200 up for CSK.

Cummins into his last over of the night and Shivam Dube is taking no prisoners. First ball, slower one, pitched wide and it's met right with the middle of the blade for a straight six over the SRH skipper's head. A wide follows. Cummins then goes full and on the stumps, this time, Dube whacks it down mid wicket for four. Gaikwad goes inside out off the last ball, uppish but safe. 16 from the over. Cummins goes for 49 off his four. 192/2 after 18 overs.

Natarajan to bowl his third over. This is his territory, isn't it? But facing him is the most-talked about Indian finisher in the league this season. And for good measure. Shivam Dube clasps onto a fuller one from the left-armer and heaves it over mid wicket for SIX! His first of the night. 

The left-armer almost claims Dube with a fine caught and bowled attempt but it falls just short of him. Changes the angle against the southpaw, just the fractional of width outside off, but Dube carves it over extra cover for another maximum. 176/2 after 17 overs.

150 up for the hosts in the 16th over but they won't be wrong in feeling a certain discomfort about their projected score. Especially against this time. Will anything under 250 be good enough to contain SRH? RCB had shown that could be the case in the previous game. 

As for now, the skipper continues to pickpocket the boundaries. A wide-fullish delivery, cut behind square for four. Close the over, with a hook shot down fine leg for another boundary. 159/2 after 16.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to close his quota for the night. And Ruturaj Gaikwad is not the batter one would want to bowl at this point. Picks a slower-short one from Bhuvi with a pull shot over mid wicket for SIX!

And just as he goes full off the next one, tees off a straight lofted drive down the ground for four. Cruises to 80. CSK are 148/2 after 15 overs.

Jaydev Unadkat bowling his third. A full toss on the stumps and Daryl Mitchell is unable to clear the deep mid wicket fence and finds Nitish Kumar Reddy. A second wicket for SRH. Mitchell goes for 52 as Shivam Dube makes way in the middle.

What better time for Chennai's destructor in chief to arrive? But for now, it's Gaikwad, who's clearing the fence. Latches onto a short one, accessing the fine leg boundary, for SIX! His second maximum of the night. Keeps the strike for the next over. 134/2 after 14 overs.

Cummins to bowl his second. Goes full and too far outside the off stump, Mitchell with an awkward yes-no reverse paddle shot down third man for four. 100 partnership up between these two. Mitchell brings up his half-century from 29 deliveries. His first fifty in IPL. 123/1 after 13 overs. Time for a strategic timeout.

Shahbaz Ahmed into his third over. A deliver lined up on the leg stump, paddled down fine leg for FOUR. Then, a fullish delivery on the stumps, rocketed down the ground for another boundary. He's amping it up now, Daryl Mitchell. Could've been a third boundary in the over but fine work in the deep from SRH fielders. Mitchell moves to 45 off 26 as the 12th over comes to a close. CSK are 115/1.

Natarajan to bowl his second of the night. Goes a tad too short to Mitchell, and offers width outside off, and the Kiwi meets it with an wristy slice down third man for four. Such control in execution, stood on his toes without losing his shape. 100 comes up for the Super Kings. 101/1 after 11 overs.

Unadkat replaces Shahbaz. Angles a fullish delivery in to Mitchell, who clamps it straight past the bowler for four. JEEZ, that was hit with some furiousity. A good comeback from the left-armer, mixes up his pace well. CSK collect 10 from the over. 92/1 at the halfway stage.

Pat Cummins into his first over. Mitchell gets a hold of his fullish delivery outside off, lofts it over long off for SIX! That's a first for the Kiwi on the night and only the second for CSK. 

Gaikwad closes the over with a superb pull shot down mid wicket for four. Brings up his fifty off 27 deliveries. This, to follow on the hundred he scored here in CSK's last game. 82/1 after nine overs.

Shahbaz Ahmed continues as the lone spinner at the moment for Hyderabad. Gaikwad had picked him for a couple of boundaries in front and behind the square on the off side in his first over. This time, the CSK skipper tracks back into his crease and fashions a cut shot down deep point for four. 67/1 after eight overs.

Jaydev Unadkat with the ball. Goes touch too full and is met with an exquisite cover drive from Daryl Mitchell for FOUR!

Nine runs from the over. 59/1 after seven.

T Natarajan introduced into the attack. His length ball is straying down the leg side and Gaikwad is in too good a touch to miss out on that. Tugs it down fine leg for another boundary. Fifty up for the home side as the field restrictions are lifted. 

Cummins brings in Bhuvi for a third over in the powerplay. A change of ends for him. Goes length and on the stumps and this time, it's Mitchell who dishes out a lofted-straight drive for FOUR! Brings his captain on strike off the next ball.

Gaikwad with another set of consecutive boundaries and the run rate is healthier than it was pre-first wicket for CSK. 45/1 after five overs.

Spin introduced in the powerplay as Shahbaz Ahmed comes in to bowl. These two are excellent players of slower bowling, what's Cummins thinking here.

Gaikwad relieves a bit of pressure with a cut short behind square followed by a cover drive for back-to-back boundaries. 11 runs come from that over. 30/1 after four.

Bhivi into his second over. Goes length off the first delivery and now it's Rahane who finds the gap. Pulls it down deep backward square leg for four. This one was pitched on the off stump. Bhuvi teases him with a couple of loosely width pace-off deliveries outside off but the CSK opener is unable to connect. Off the one that's pitched on the stump again, Rahane goes for a lofted shot down mid wicket but has located the fielder at fence. A first wicket for SRH! Daryl Mitchell is the new man in. Good over for the visitors. 19/1 after three overs.

Nitish Kumar Reddy handed the ball from the other end. Starts off with a wide down the leg side. He's targetting that region against the two CSK batters. Goes for a length delivery down that region and Rahane misses out on a pull. There's a review from SRH. Klaasen has caught the ball behind the stumps but the umpire's given it wide. It's not caught an edge or a glove but there's a spike on the UltraEdge as the ball passes Rahane's shirt. So the wide's been reversed. It's Gaikwad who locates the first boundary of the night for CSK. A pull shot off the last ball down mid wicket. 13/0 after two overs.

A flick down deep square leg and Chennai are off the mark. Just the two off that first delivery. It's followed by some movement on offer for Hyderabad's veteran new-ball bowler. A fine start this from him. Just the four runs from the over. 

So, SRH to bowl first. You haven't heard it that often this season. It is after all the team that's made a reputation of setting sky-high totals. But one can't fault Pat Cummins when he wins the toss and elects to bowl first. The man is an astute reader of the conditions. 

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the new ball in his hands as Ajinkya Rahane and Ruturaj Gaikwad walk into the middle. Rahane takes the strike, off we go!

Quite the finish at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the first game of the day. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru had looked like they were breezing towards a win at the midway stage of their chase - 201 - against the Gujarat Titans. Will Jacks though, closes a nine-wicket win in quite the fashion - with 24 balls left to be played. A 100 for the Englishman off just 41 deliveries. Virat Kohli remained unbeaten at 70. Pat Cummins, SRH: We're going to bowl. Absolutely, you can see why it's pretty loud here. Boys are pretty pumped up. We've got Bhuvi who's a very nice new ball bowler, I just fill in wherever required. We're going with one extra batter, Markande misses out. We've looked to bowl first, maybe dew comes into it later in the evening.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK: Was hoping to win the toss, nothing we can control much. If we put up runs against them they'll definitely be under pressure. We have just lost those clutch moments in the game, just 2-3 overs while batting when we couldn't capitalise. Even with bowling, we haven't gotten those starts in the powerplay and sometimes when we've got that we haven't been able to finish off well. Overall, we're happy with where we are but we're just looking to win those clutch moments.

Pat Cummins calls it right and Hyderabad will have a bowl first. 

Daryl Mitchell: The pitch usually is on the slower side. Can't just force the ball. Have to find ways to keep manipulating the bowlers. Firstly, it's coming in and being present as you can. Not coming in with a plan of how the pitch is going to play and what score is needed. It's about adapting on the go. My role is to keep trying to build partnerships, keep trying to put them under pressure in the middle phase. And hopefully allow us to set a platform towards the end. Love being a part of CSK and loving playing in front of this amazing crowd.

Samuel Badree and Anjum Chopra: "Slightly shorter on one side but it shouldn't make much of a difference. Down the ground, the shots need to be well timed. It looks a bit dry. Some aberations here, traditionally teams that have batted first have succeeded but not this season. Spinners haven't had a significant part in this season either as has been the case previously. It looks very dry, there's a mosaic underlay and there isn't really a sheen that you have come to expect in this year's IPL. Same surface that was used in that game against GT where CSK scored over 200 runs. This pitch produces the greatest degree of turn, 2.4 degrees as compared 1,8 degrees compared to the other pitches. Still think there will be some assistance for the spinners and for those who can bowl slower delivers but there's still runs on the board. Might just want to have couple of extra overs of spin up your sleeve. There might be significant dew later in the evening" 

Chennai Super Kings: CSK’s batting has hovered around skipper Gaikwad, who pulled off only his second IPL century the other day, and the in-form Shivam Dube, who once again impressed with yet another fifty.

Sunrisers Hyderabad: There is unlikely to be any shuffling in the visiting batting order, but Aiden Markram might need to step up, having been dismissed in singles figures in the last two contests. In bowling, senior seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the only one who could be at the receiving end, having managed to claim just a wicket in the last three fixtures.

Chepauk has seen 200 crossed three times in four matches this season – two of those instances in the previous game there.

No batting unit has taken the season by storm as the Sunrisers Hyderabad's. Three times the men in orange have breached the 250-run mark and now have the tournament's two highest scores (277 and 287) to their name. The recipe behind it?

“It’s not going to work every game. But I can tell you, everyone’s terrified of when they come up against us and we have got to blow some teams out of the water before they have even walked out on the field,” Travis Head had said last week. “Here at the Sunrisers, the aim has been to take control of the Powerplay. Leading a country and a franchise is comparing oranges to apples. Leading Australia where he has known his players for the majority of his career is quite different from leading an IPL side where he has to adapt and understand the skill sets of players sometimes he is unaware of in a short space of time. But all speculations were put to rest once the tournament started.

It was late last year that Shashank Singh received the soul-crushing news from Mumbai. Vidya Paradkar, a prominent maidan coach who mentored the likes of Zaheer Khan and Ajinkya Rahane, and took Shashank under his wings, was no more. At the other end of the line was Paradkar’s widow, Pramila.

“I told him that I’ll be taking over the academy because sir had wished that it keeps running,” she tells The Indian Express. The response from the former pupil was a short one. “I’m coming to Mumbai. We’ll talk about it.”

What followed took the 67-year-old Pramila by surprise. “He came here to play at the DY Patil (Stadium) in November. ‘Mai handle karta hu. Aap chinta mat karo’ (I’ll handle the academy, so you don’t worry). Whenever he gets the chance, he comes to Mumbai and is here teaching the kids.” (READ MORE)

One of the finds of the season have been Delhi's swashbuckling Australian batter - Jake Fraser-McGurk. Against the Mumbai Indians, the DC opener slammed Hardik Pandya and Nuwan Thushara in his 27-ball 84, but even Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t spared.

Perhaps, only a monkey can stop Jake Fraser-McGurk. Like it did in the U-19 world cup in South Africa in 2020 when he was sent back home ahead of a clash against India. The story goes that on a trip to a nature reserve in Kimberly, he got too close to a monkey who wasn’t pleased with the company and scratched his face. In India, he has stayed away from the simians and has got close to just one thing every ball: try to smash a boundary, preferably a six. (READ MORE)

On Saturday, Hardik Pandya and Co faced their sixth defeat from nine matches this season. Lying ninth in the points table, Mumbai Indians are all but out of contention for the playoffs. And the dressing room vibes don't seem much healthier. 

After the loss at Kotla, the skipper was asked to point his fingers to a moment he believed lost them the game. Hardik was unimpressed by how Tilak had handled one portion of the game.

“(When) Axar was bowling to a left-hander (Tilak), the better option could have been to go after him,” Hardik said in his blunt assessment on the official broadcast after the game. “I think it was just a little game awareness that we missed out. Playing on flat decks and Indian spinners “not spinning the ball” enough are the reasons that Muttiah Muralitharan believes the tweakers have not been able to make an impact in the ongoing India Premier League. In a season where totals in excess of 240 have become the norm at most venues, only three spinners — Yuzendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Sunil Narine – are in the top 20 wicket-takers list. Both Sanju Samson and KL Rahul rose up the charts to 2nd and 3rd position in the Orange Cap race with their respective knocks in the Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals match on Saturday.
