CSK vs SRH Highlights, IPL 2025: Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Chennai Super Kings by five wickets to stay alive in Playoffs race

We kept losing wickets, and in the first innings the wicket was slightly better and 155 is not a justifiable score, because it wasn't turning a lot. Yes, after the 8-10th over, it became slightly two-paced when it comes to the fast bowlers, but nothing that was out of the ordinary, I feel we could have put few more runs on the board. Yes, second innings there was a bit of help, our spinners the quality was there and they bowled in the right areas and it was stopping a bit but we were short by 15-20 runs. I think he (Brevis) batted really well and we need something like that in the middle order, where we have slightly struggled when the spinners come in, that's a time we need to either you do it by batsmanship, where you pick up your areas or try to play the big shot in your area. I feel that's where we have been lacking and not been really able to dominate or get runs against spinners at good pace in the middle. In a tournament like this, if you have one or two areas where you can plug in the holes it is good, but if majority of your players are not doing well, it becomes very difficult. Because you have to do a few changes, but if majority are doing well then you give those guys that extra few games and if it doesn't work out than you move onto the next one. But if 4 of them are not performing at the same time, you are bound to make that change, because you can't just keep on going. Because we are not putting enough runs on the board, because it is essential right now, the game has changed. I am not saying it is always 180-200, but assess the conditions and then look to put the runs on the board.

Nitish and Mendis resort to singles and doubles in Khaleel's over, as only six remain to win now. Jadeja bowled the penultimate over. Kamindu started the over with a dot before sweeping the ball for a quick double. He takes two more deliveries to finish off the game with two more doubles. With his win, Chennai are all but out of this tournament. SRH, meanwhile, stay alive, hanging by a thin rope. 

While it was Mendis until the last over, it turned out to be out of colours Nitish Kumar Reddy who pretty much sealed the game for Sunrisers Hyderabad by picking 15 off Pathirana's third over. First four came from a pull, that had so much authority from NKR. Then he throws his bat to an outside delivery, playing square of the wicket for a second boundary of the over. 13 left to win now and Khaleel comes in. 

Kamindu Mendis is proving to be the difference between two teams here. First, he timed the off ball well to get a four off Pathirana before reaping rewards off a free hit by Noor Ahmed with a boundary. Noor bowled two no-balls in his last over and gave 13 off it. 28 needed now in 24 deliveries. 

Noor Ahmed continues from one end after removing Kishan. He started with five wides, which drifted down the leg past MS Dhoni. Mendis got a quick double which took Sunrisers Hyderabad past the 100-run mark. Mendis hit Noor for a boundary, looking to make this a big over for SRH but Noor picked up his second wicket. He removed set batter Aniket Verma, who played a reckless slog sweep and an outside edge was taken by Deepak Hooda at long-on. 106/5 now, SRH and the contest is hanging in the balance. Nitish Kumar Reddy comes out. 

Ishan Kishan was looking in top touch as he hit Noor Ahmed for a cracking six, only to be dismissed in the following delivery. A pull over deep mid-wicket for a six and then a flat pull straight to Sam Curran at the same region. Four down SRH now on 90. Kamindu Mendis is the new batter in at number six. Matheesha Pathirana, meanwhile, was introduced in the bowling attack and gets away with just a four-run over. After 13, Hyderabad are 94 for four.    

Aniket Verma started aggressively and the duo of him and Kishan look solid at the moment. They have managed 25 in the last overs bowled by Sam Curran and Jadeja, which saw the duo hit two sixes and a four. This charge from both batters take the visitors to 80 in 11 overs and CSK are again in dire need of a quick wicket.  

Sam Curran was brought into the attack and he was hit for 12 runs after Kishan got two boundaries to take SRH past 50. Ravindra Jadeja came for his second over and straight away removed Heinrich Klaasen. Full, flat and into the middle, Klaasen muscled it straight down the ground where Deepak Hooda was stationed. He fell after scoring seven off 8. Aniket Verma walk out as the new batter. Jadeja gave just one from his over.

Cleaned up! Anshul Kamboj sent packing a dangerous-looking Travis Head! Kept in middle, angled in and crashed onto stumps. Kamboj ended up bowling a maiden. Heinrich Klaasen is the new man in at No. four. Ravindra Jadeja joined the attack and leaked five from his first over.

Ishan Kishan, after his century against the Rajasthan Royals, looked in touch for the first time. A free-flowing Kishan hit Khaleel and Kamboj for three boundaries. Travis Head played all six deliveries of the fourth over against Kamboj and squeezed a couple of boundaries in an over that had four dots. SRH have scored 24 out of 29 with six boundaries. 

Khaleel Ahmed started from over the wicket and it took just two balls to remove Abhishek Sharma. Brilliant start for Chennai after Abhishek looked to punch the outside off ball and played it straight to Ayush Mhatre at cover. Ishan Kishan joined Travis Head at the middle and got off the mark with a single. Travis Head also gets going. He got off the mark with a boundary. Anshul Kamboj came from the other end and gave seven off his first over.

Deepak Hooda take Chennai over the 150-mark. He slammed Harshal's full toss over fine-leg. It was also a no-ball but he failed to repeat the rewards of a free hit. Jaydev Unadkat bowled the last over and CSK failed to play the full quota tonight. Deepak Hooda, who started the over on a positive note with a boundary, was sent packing at the last man on the fifth delivery. CSK managed 154 in 19.5 deliveries. With due coming in, they are at least 30 runs short here. 

Eight down, CSK now and this innings is just spiralling downwards for the host. Impact Sub Anshul Kamboj is the latest one to depart. Cummins got his second before Harshal Patel picked his fourth scalp. He removed Noor Ahmad as CSK struggle to get over 150. 

Harshal came for his third wicket and the entire DEN has been silenced. Dhoni out! Dhoni looked to clear backward point, by playing away from his body and played straight to Abhishek Sharma. CSK's hopes were pinned on him but things are looking very bleak for the home team now. They also used their Impact Sub by bringing in Anshul Kamboj.

One brings another. Shivam Dube holes out to Abhishek Sharma and CSK are six down now. Jaydev Unadkat is pumped after his first wicket and he ended up bowling a very tight over, giving just four off it, but the crowd has erupted. Why? Because Dhoni came in the middle. After getting off the mark with a single off Unadkat, he hit Zeeshan for a boundary and the whole of Chepauk is on its feet.  

While Kamindu Mendis went only for just three runs, it continued for his third over and faced the heat from Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis. The South African, who is playing his first match of the season, hit Mendis for two maximums. First over long-on, then over deep-mid-wicket. Dube also fired one over long-off, making it a 20-run over. Harshal Patel returned to the strike and had the last laugh against a dangerous-looking Brevis, who hit him for a six before. The wicket went to Harshal, but it was Kamindu Mendis who took a stunning diving catch.

Kamindu Mendis returned for his second over and outfoxed Ravindra Jadeja with an arm ball. He cleaned up Jadeja for Sunrisers Hyderabad's fourth wicket. Mendis gave just three off his over before Shivam Dube, the new batter at the middle, hit Shami for back-to-back fours, making his over worth of 11 runs.

Zeeshan Ansari has been clobbered for a six by Jadeja. He put his body on the shot, went big on leg side over long-on for a maximum to start the ninth over. Both Jadeja and Brevis keep ticking the scoreboard with singles and doubles to take 12 off Zeeshan's second over before the strategic time-out was taken. CSK get to 73 for 3 in nine overs. 

After the powerplay, it is time for spinners straightaway. First Zeeshan Ansari and then Kamindu Menis have been brought into the attack. Harshal, meanwhile, dropped a dolly; otherwise, Jadeja would have been back to the pavilion by now. A quite two overs which gave CSK 11 from it. 

Out walks Ravindra Jadeja, in at number four to join Ayush Mhatre at middle. He got off the mark with a lucky four with an outside edge that ran away past the fielder at short third. Harshal gave eight from his first over before Pat Cummins returned to the attack. Cummins' arrival also brought a wicket for SRH as Ayush Mhatre fell after scoring an attacking 30 off 19. Mhatre looked to go over extra cover but holed out to Ishan Kishan at mid-off. Dewald Brevis come at the middle and start with a single. Chennai reached the 50-run mark off the last ball of the Powerplay.

The last three overs have fetched 10, 10 and 10 for Chennai Super Kings. They have hit two boundaries each in these overs, where Mhatre has accounted for five out of these six boundaries. CSK will need to continue this momentum going forward. As I type, Sam Curran falls for 9. A good start has now been ruined with the second wicket. Harshal Patel, who was brought into the attack by skipper Cummins, provided them with a breakthrough. Patel kept on bowling wide outside the off stump and a short ball lured Curran for a pull straight to Aniket Verma at deep mid wicket.

Although Shaik Rasheed failed today but CSK's decision to move on from Conway, Rachin and Rahul Tripathi and give a chance to youngsters like Ayush Mhatre, Brevis seems to be working. Sam Curran, who joined Ayush after Rasheed's wicket, has stayed on, while Ayush took up the role of aggressor in this innings. Mhatre went hard against Jaydev Unadkat, who was SRH's first bowling change, to hit him for back-to-back boundaries. 

Ayush Mhatre looks different. He slapped the Australian and Hyderabad captain for a four to welcome him into the bowling attack. He got some room on the offside and slammed it behind point. Curran, who got off the mark with a single in the previous over, took a single off the fourth delivery only after playing a couple of dots. As I update, Ayush ends the over with another boundary. Mind you, he is only 17. CSK take 10 from the second over before Shami continues from one end. Ayush and then Curran get a boundary each in Shami's over, making it another 10-run over for CSK. They get to 27 in three overs. Not a bad start after a first ball duck. 

What a start for Mohammed Shami. He came over the wicket against Shaik Rasheed and induced an edge which was carried straight to first slip Abhishek Sharma. Perfect seam position from Shami, moved away just enough as Rasheed poked it behind. Golden duck for Shaik Rasheed.

Pat Cummins: We gonna have a bowl first. Chennai is always a big game, coming off a couple of loses but it is a new venue and boys are up for it. If the wicket is good, backing them to get a big total and otherwise also, backing them to do well. The pitch looks a little bit dry.

MS Dhoni: Dew was the main reason why we also wanted to bowl first. Almost in all the departments when you are not playing good cricket, chances are there will be pressure on the other guys as well. We want to get the process right and that is what we are looking to aim for the rest of the games. We are looking at one game at a time and we are looking at few combinations and have confidence in your ability and execute what you want to. We are not too sure how the wicket is. The groundsmen are trying their level best, I feel the old red soil wicket was a good one, the one before 2010 Champions League. We have made 2 changes. Rachin and Shankar out. Brevis and Hooda in.

It looks like Nitish Kumar Reddy isn't having the IPL season many expected. After seven matches, his stats tell a story of struggle: just 131 runs at an average of 21.83 and a strike rate of only 113.91, without a single half-century to his name. We saw glimpses of his potential early on, but as the Sunrisers Hyderabad's batting unit as a whole started to falter, his form seemed to dip as well.

This season, when the team has lost early wickets, Nitish has often become overly cautious while trying to steady the innings. His knocks against the Mumbai Indians (19 runs off 21 balls) and the Gujarat Titans (31 runs off 34 balls) lacked his usual attacking flair, though he was tasked with the responsibility of guiding SRH to a respectable total. It seems his more restrained approach in the middle overs has coincided with a change in SRH's strategy. Despite their run to the final on the back of sensational performances, SRH  remained a poor travelling side last year and only had a fair share of luck at the toss, winning 50 percent of them in 10 matches. However, that hardly helped on the field as SRH lost all five games where they won the toss away from home. Quite interestingly, SRH won four of the five away matches where they lost the toss, batting first on all five occasions!

CSK had an ill-fated run with the tosses last year at home, winning only one of the seven coin flips at home. While they comfortably won the only game where they won the toss, CSK had a mixed bag of results after losing the toss. Asked to bat first on four occasions after losing the toss, CSK dropped two defeats besides as many wins. Oppositions who let the Super Kings chase after winning the toss, however, weren’t successful as they lost on both occasions.

The temperature is expected to be 37 degrees Celsius on Friday, according to the Accuweather app. However, a thing of relief for the players is that it drops down to 28 degrees Celsius in the evening.

It felt like déjà vu again. In IPL 2022, Chennai Super Kings turned to MS Dhoni in their biggest hour of crisis, when Ravindra Jadeja stepped down as captain. Three seasons later, the script has played out again. CSK have turned to the 43-year-old to lead the franchise, after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered a fracture in his elbow that ruled him out of the tournament.

The big difference is that unlike 2022 when Dhoni took over from Jadeja when their play-off hopes were all but over, this time Chennai are still with a chance to turn their fortunes around. A humongous challenge, though, awaits one of cricket’s all-time great captains....

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni will make a milestone 400th T20 appearance during the IPL 2025 match against SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
