Sri Lanka were dealt a big blow as the ICC confirmed on Sunday that captain Dasun Shanaka will miss the rest of the ongoing Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.
The Event Technical Committee of the tournament has approved Chamika Karunaratne as a replacement for Shanaka in the Sri Lankan squad.
Karunaratne who has played 23 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Shanaka was ruled out due to a right thigh muscle injury sustained during Sri Lanka’s match against Pakistan on 10 October. The injury needs three weeks to recover.
Karunaratne was originally named as the traveling reserve for Sri Lanka. Kusal Mendis is the desginated vice-captain in the original squad which was already without one of their star players in Wanindu Hasaranga.
Sri Lanka have lost both of their matches so far in the tournament, facing defeats against South Africa and Pakistan in two high-scoring affairs. They next take on Australia on Monday in Lucknow in a battle between two win-less teams.
The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.
