Hangzhou Asian Para Games, Day 1: Avani Lekhara, track and field athletes shine as India win 17 medals
The fourth edition of Asian Para Games officially got underway with medal events from 22 October.

India had won 14 medals at the 2010 edition, 33 in 2014 and 72 in 2018. In Guangzhou at the inaugural edition, India had won 1 gold while that number went up to 15 in Indonesia. In Jakarta, India finished 9th overall in the medals tally.
Historically, much like the Asian Games, track and field have contributed most to the India medal tally at the Asian Para Games. Before the 2023 edition, India had won a total of 119 medals and 60 of those came from athletics.

On day one of medal events at the fourth edition of Asian Para Games, Tokyo Paralympics champion was among the gold medallists while track and field expectedly contributed handsomely to India’s tally. Indian contingent brought home a total of 17 medals on day one and are placed fourth on the table.
India’s count for the day stood at 6 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze with five of those gold medals coming from athletics. India also won a first ever Taekwondo medal at the Asian Para Games thanks to Aruna Tanwar.
