Asian Games 2026 Day 14 Highlights: As many as six gold medals have come for India on Day 14 of the 2026 Asian Games thus far. The last of them came from hockey where the Indian women’s team won gold for the first time since 1982. Three have come from the boxing and one has come from wrestling and archery each.

The women’s recurve archery team of Ankita Bhakat, Kumkum Anil Mohod and Kirti Sharma has given the Indian contingent the best start to the 14th day of the Asian Games: by defeating the mighty South Koreans in the final to win a first-ever gold medal in the event. The Koreans are 10-time Olympic champions besides being 10-time Asian Games champions. They had never lost in an Asian Games final since the 1970s. Until Friday, that is. The Indian mixed recurve team of Kumkum Mohod and Dhiraj Dommadevara then claimed a silver medal as did the men’s recurve archery team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhoge.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Shivani Naik on the hockey gold

Also. Where the clearances went from Navneet and Sushila and Shilpi -- it was so low-key, and invisible for want of a word. Like stubbing out a flame. Clean. Very clean clearances to the side.

That's a lot of running. A lot of moments of high pressure on them. Ice cool nerves from all.

Also, here's one way to show off the hockey dribble: run down the clock and deny the Chinese. Beautifully done. re: Rutuja Pisal, Lalremsiami, Salima, Ishika.

Not every dribble has to be dazzling. Some were just to defensively frustrate.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Shivani Naik on the hockey gold

India's historic Tokyo Olympics finish had seen them dump out Australia 1-0. Goals will goal-away, but the defense has been titanic for this golden triumph. Let's deal is adjectives and adverbs.

Navneet was dependable, technical, fearless, unyielding, relentless and an absolute defensive lynchpin for India.

Sushila Chanu. A nightmare for China, right down centre but also fluid after Chinese circle entries. Trapping that was invisible, looked effortless, a hamstring that refused to give way.

Indians eventually got a Chinese to go crash into their defenders literally.

Also, Shilpi Dabas, who made a very late entry into the Indian team but made some line clearances look calm, collected.

Ofcourse, goalkeeper Savita with that strike defended going to her left in a split second. And Bichoo who followed the lines diligently and could overturn the second stroke after a referral.

But also, Salima Tete as first rusher and Topo.

Like they say in NBA, Defense, Defense, Dazzling, Deadly, Daringly Defense.

About 3 mins to go in the match now, China have taken out their goalkeeper. THIS. IS. IT.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

53rd min: China's attacks have been somewhat concentrated on the right hand side. India have been flawless in defence in this quarter. The orange shirts now charge forward but their attack fizzles out when they concede a foul.

India 1-0 China at the end of the third quarter

A herculean effort from the Indians to keep their lead intact.Encouragingly for them, they went on the attack more often towards the last two minutes of it. There were no clear cut chances from it though.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

37th min: Relentless from China at the moment and the Indians are starting to look tired now. Repeated circle entries from the Chinese but the Indians are absorbing it all. How long can India keep this up though...

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

33rd min: A PC for China that India keep out but it is only a retake. The second time around, Navneet with a goal-line save. And the ref gives another penalty stroke! This time, though, India go for the referral. It is succesfull, the decision is rolled down to another PC. Navneet put her body on the line there, first with the goal line save and then literally going down on all fours to block the shot on rebound. It hit Navneet's body but there as the goalkeeper behind her, which is why it is a PC and not a penalty stroke. This time, once again, bodies on the line by the Indians. Salima Tete as the first rusher takes the full blow of the drag flick on her hand. It goes out for a long corner. Salima is winded by that, she has to go off for a while to get some medical attention. This is gritty stuff from the Indians. Baljeet comes in for Salima.

A delay to take that long corner because there is Salima's blood on the pitch.

HALF TIME! India 1-0 China

A lot of pressure from China in the second quarter but India somehow absorb it all. The highlight of the match is probably going to be Savita's save from the penalty stroke. Astonishing from the former captain.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

22nd min: China on the charge now, and the ref blows the whistle for a penalty stroke! Susheela Chanu with a slight push on He Jianxin. India decide to not refer it.

AND SAVITA SAVES IT! COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH THE LEGEND!

It was a low hit to her left by Zhang Ying and Savita goes the right way. Remember the ball takes microseconds to reach goal during a penalty stroke and so it is impossible for goalkeepers to make their save based on its trajectory. They have to predict where it is going to go based on the movements of the taker and that takes experience. Savita has tons of it and she used all of it. That is as good as a second goal for India.

India 1-0 China in 2nd quarter

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

19th min: China win a PC a few mins into the start of the second quarter. They go for a variation that India block but there was a foul by Susheela Chanu. Another PC, this time it is a vicious drag flick, but Navneet Kaur take a bow! She is standing near the right post and stays there seeing the ball coming in, deflects it away almost in front of her face. Astonishing stuff and India's lead is intact.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

India 1-0 China at the end of the 1st quarter

The last time India won the women's hockey gold medal was back when the women's event was first introduced at the Asiad in 1982. China are the reigning gold medallists, with India winning bronze last time around. China are also chasing their fifth gold, which would let them equal South Korea as the most succesfull team in the history of the Asian Games.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

13th min: The ball hits the body of a Chinese defender and India have a PC. Navneet with the flick, it goes inches wide. China are still having more possession, they are hardly making any errors in their passes. But India are holding strong and looking very incisive whenever they come forward. High quality hockey on display at the moment.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Hockey update

10th min: GOAL! Lalremsiami puts India ahead in her 200th appearance! Brilliant from captain Salima Tete to work the ball forward into the D from the left, a pass to Sakshi who then gives the ball to Lalremsiami. The latter with a thunderous hit into the roof of goal.

Shivani Naik: Field goal. Power in that reverse from Lalremsiami for India's 1-0

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Shivani Naik on the medal table

K-popped?

India is chasing a higher medal standing, hoping to move up from 5th.

It'll do what it needs to do.

Could it go to third? Unlikely this time.

Korea is on 33 gold.

A total of 133 (33G + 39S + 61B).

What will go unnoticed however is the massive drop for South Korea, though late surges can help them go past Hangzhou gold.

They are on 42 Gold. Total of 190. (42 G + 59 S + 89 B).

That's 9 gold, 20 silvers and 28 bronzes adrift. Though last stretch has lot of finals.

Economic realities always reflect on sport.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: Know your medallist

Sujeet Kalkal pulled a gold medal out of nowhere for India on the wrestling mat after prevailing over Tajikistan's Abdulmazhid Kudiev in the men's 65kg final on Friday. Sujeet was down 2-9 in the second period of the gold medal bout, but turned it around to win by a 10-9 margin.

Here's a brief profile of Sujeet Kalkal:

From the modest village akhada of Imlota, Haryana, Sujeet Kalkal has steadily risen to become one of India’s promising freestyle wrestlers in the fiercely contested 65kg category.

Born on 5 November 2002, Sujeet was introduced to wrestling by his father, Dayanand Kalkal, a former national-level wrestler. He began his training in the village akhada, where limited facilities and access to specialised coaching tested his early development. His move to Sonipat in 2021, where he trained alongside experienced wrestlers, marked an important turning point in his career. Success soon followed. In 2022, Sujeet won a Gold medal in U23 & U20 Asian Championships, before making his mark on the senior circuit with a gold at the UWW Ranking Series in Tunis. His journey has not been without setbacks.

In 2024, he missed the Asian Olympic Qualifier after being stranded in Dubai due to flight disruptions caused by flooding, reaching Bishkek only after the weigh-in had begun. Rather than allowing the setback to define him, Sujeet responded with greater determination. His biggest senior breakthrough came with the 2026 Asian Championships title in the 65kg category, a victory that propelled him to World No. 1 in the UWW rankings. Having already overcome limited beginnings and difficult setbacks, Sujeet now steps onto the Asian Games stage for the first time in 2026—ready to turn his growing promise into a defining performance.

Asian Games Day 14 Live: What is Sepaktakraw, where India just won a bronze medal in the men's quadrant event?

Sepaktakraw is a Southeast Asian indoor team sport played with a rattan or rubberised plastic ball. Also known as kick volleyball, the rules and regulations of the sport are similar to volleyball, with the obvious exception of using hands to touch the ball, and instead using one’s feet, head, chest or knee. A match is played between two teams of 2-4 players each.

The game is extremely popular and widely played in countries like Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Indonesia. Although the sport has never featured in the Olympics, it has been a regular competitive sport at the Asian Games since 1990, where the Thai National Team has dominated the competition.

He quickly established himself on the Indian domestic archery circuit, competing at several national championships and winning medals. His comeback year marked an important milestone in his career, as he was selected for the Asia Cup, where he won the Gold Medal in the Recurve Mixed Team event alongside Ankita Bhagat. It's Abbas Mohammadreza Ebrahimzadehsavadkouhi.

Massive, regal-sounding name. But Sujeet was all over him, with speed.

Bajrang, the Tank, used to dominate this category with strength & stamina. But he was notoriously a slow starter - which used to make his late comebacks dramatic and exciting. He was a phenom.

But Sujeet takes that out of the equation. His fleeting speed ensures he gets cracking from the start. That first points should have been 4, not 2. But no matter. He races to 10-0.

Props to Hindi commentary of Sony. They are actually decent here.

The question is how close to the 2023 Asian Games medals tally of 106 (and the 28 golds) the Indians can get. At the end of day 13, the Indians were at 64 medals with 10 golds, which put them in the 8th spot.

Just three quick gold medals, and they could jump from 8th spot in the standings t0o 5th spot.

From selling milk to winning Asiad silver – wrestler Nitesh Siwach’s journey

If someone had told Nitesh Siwach 11 years ago that he would one day win an Asian Games wrestling medal, he would have scarcely believed the prediction. After all, at that time, he had sustained a serious knee injury which kept the youngster away from the mat for more than 18 months.

It was then that Nitesh’s father Anand and uncle Naveen asked him to assist them in their dairy work – which involved fetching buffalo milk from their village Jagsi near Gohana and selling it at their shop in Panipat. The 23-year-old’s journey to the silver medal in the men’s 97kg Greco-Roman category at Aichi-Nagoya has been an eventful one. Though he couldn’t win the gold, he became the first Indian Greco-Roman grappler since 1962 (Ganpat Andalkar, 97+kg gold, and Malwa Singh 52 kg gold) to make the final.
