Asian Games 2026 Day 12 Highlights: India’s compound archers have started off day 12 at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya with three gold medals in a row. First, the team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep, Taniparthi Chikitha defeated the mighty South Koreans in the semis and then China in the women’s team final to claim India’s seventh gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya. Then, Taniparthi Chikitha and Sahil Rajesh Jadhav claimed a gold and a quota spot at the Los Angeles Olympics after outlasting a Korean pair in a nerve-wracking shoot-off. Trap shooter Neeru Dhanda returned to the shooting range a day after winning a individual gold and a team silver to win one more gold, this time with Kynan Chenai in the mixed trap event. Then, the men’s compound archery team of Sahil Jadhav, Kushal Dalal and Thirumuru Ganesh Mani Ratnam claimed the compound archery contingent’s third gold in a row on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, boxers Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya lost their semi-final bouts to take bronze medals in the boxing ring. Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain won her bout to enter the final. The women’s squash team of Tanvi Khanna, Anahat Singh and Joshana Chinappa and the men’s team both assured India more medals from squash by entering the semi-finals.

Asian Games Day 12 Live: The simulation that bore fruit in gold...

India swept all three compound team golds at the Asian Games — the women’s team, men’s team and mixed team. And thrice, they beat South Korea (two times in semis and once in final), Asian Games’ most dominant archery nation. The mixed-team victory, secured by Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav after a shoot-off, also earned India their first Olympic quota place for Los Angeles 2028.

Before all that, the Indian compound archers spent 15 days at the SAI centre in Sonipat, Haryana, training in a replica of the Asian Games environment they would encounter in Japan. READ MORE.

Asian Games Day 12 Live: Indian women's hockey team reach the gold medal match!

The Indian women's hockey have confirmed at least a silver medal for themselves. They had won bronze at the last Asian Games, then they failed to qualify for the Olympics, then they put up a very impressive performance in the recently concluded World Cup and now, they have a chance at winning gold if they beat China on Friday. Now China has been a Great Wall for India but, as Pritish Raj said in this wonderful article before these Asian Games, recent evidence suggests that the gap between the two nations has been closed.

As for South Korea, well, one has to wonder what in the world happened to them. They did nothing apart from defend with everything they had today, which was very commendable of course. But it is a far cry from the side that used to dominate the Asian Games, South Korea had won four back-to-back gold medals between 1986 and 1998 and a fifth one in 2014.

GOAL! India 2-0 South Korea (Salima Tete 47th min)

Salima Tete makes her way into the circle and smashes it into the centre of it. The ball hits the stick of a Korean defender and rolls in. The goal, however, is awarded to the Indian captain, not often does she get on the scoresheet.

GOAL! India 1-0 South Korea (Ishika 44th minute)

At long last, the goal comes and it is a cheeky one at that. It was a penalty corner, Ishika being the injector. However, instead of going for a drag flick, Deepika played the ball right back to Ishika after receiving it at the edge of the D, the latter made no mistake with swiping the ball in. It really has been one-way traffic so far and India finally break South Korea's resistance.

At half time, India 0-0 South Korea

India had as many as nine penalty corners in that half but failed to produce any goal. Korea would be the happier of the two sides, since they managed to keep the Indians out but it remains to be seen if they can keep this up for the whole match. Sjoerd Marijne, on the other hand, would be telling the Indians to ignore the misses and keep up the pressure.

India 0-0 Korea in 2nd quarter

India have two penalty corners early in the second quarter. Deepika with the drag flick on the second one that resulted in a bit of a scramble at the goalmouth but in the end, the Koreans bring the ball out. They try to stage a counter which comes to nothing.

India 0-0 Korea at the end of 1st quarter in women's hockey semifinal

India have clearly been the better team but overall, a rather quiet first quarter with chances coming at a premium. The closest India came to scoring was from a brilliant deflection by Rutuja from a ball that lasered into the D at the start of the final minute of the quarter. However, Korea thwarted that one out.

There was a little bit of Okazaki in Sonepat last month.

At the Sports Authority of India centre in Sonepat, Indian compound archers spent 15 days training in a replica of the Asian Games environment they would encounter in Japan. The same screens, music system, targets, podium, flags and colour scheme were recreated, so that when they eventually arrived at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park, there would be as little that felt unfamiliar as possible. “We wanted them to feel that whatever happens here, they have already experienced it,” said Dronacharya Awardee Jiwanjot Singh Teja. Asian Games Day 12 Live: tennis update

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal advanced to the men's singles quarterfinals at the Asian Games with a fluent 6-3 6-2 win over Uzbekistan's Sergey Fomin here on Wednesday, while Dhakshineswar Suresh bowed out after losing his third-round match. The 249th-ranked Nagal, seeded seventh, controlled the contest against Fomin and moved into the last eight with a straight-set victory. He will next face formidable third seed China's Yibing Wu, who is ranked 111th in the world. Nagal has faced Wu once before, losing 3-6 3-6 to the Chinese at the 2024 Shanghai Masters.

Dhakshineswar, meanwhile, went down 3-6 4-6 to sixth seed Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei in the third round. The Indian had entered the last 16 after beating Indonesia's Gunawan Trismuwantara in straight sets on Tuesday.

India's men's doubles campaign also suffered a setback as N Sriram Balaji and left-handed Anirudh Chandrasekar lost a fiercely contested quarterfinal to China's Fumin Chiang and Tianhui Ziang 7-6(4) 6-7(7) 8-10. The Indian pair won the opening-set tiebreaker but were pushed into a deciding match tiebreak, which the Chinese duo edged 10-8.

India's other men's doubles pair of Yuki Bhambri and Dhakshineswar is also scheduled to play their quarterfinal later in the day.

Asian Games Day 12 Live: Boxing update from Shivani Naik

Just how massive is Lovlina storming into her second straight Asian Games final?

Massive.

The Olympic bronze medallist who broke through in 2021 has stayed in the medal mix, with consistent medals at multi sport events. After edgeing past Kazakhstan's Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in the women's 75kg semi-final, she became the first Indian woman boxer to reach back-to-back Asian Games finals, assuring India of at least a silver. Hopefully gold.

She is the first ever Indian, female or male, to make back to back Asiad Finals.

India's biggest names

Vijender: Bronze - Gold

Mary Kom: Bronze - Gold

Vikas Krishna - Bronze - Bronze - Gold

Lovlina: Silver - ? (Gold?)

It is astounding also because she has moved up a weight division from welter to middleweight, so the height advantage isn't nearly there in the 75kg as in the 69kg of her Olympics. Two Asiad finals without missing a beat though.

Underrated despite the medal. Quiet Assamese. Super economical use of punches. Vijender...ish.

Kapil Pokhariya and Priya finished with bronze on debut and in their respective categories. Kapil went down 1-4 to Uzbekistan's Turabek Khabibullaev in the men's 90kg semi, while Priya lost to China's Yang Chengyu in the women's 60kg semifinal.

Poha papad is a large Indian fritter that goes from a thin, insignificant, totally uninteresting sheet to a white, fluffy, large, cloud-in-sky like crispy munchy in seconds of a deep fry.

That is India's gold medal tally from now on. Golds will gold hereforth. Like Poha papad.

But the number to keep an eye on is the dynamic 21 in Live Time. And its progression as Korea's gold count.

No matter where India ends in relative count, it's Korea that it will be chasing to reach 3rd place on medals tally. So, gold count is relative.

Comparing it to 28 is so 2023.

Sumo wrestle-rugby squash or legit no-let?

In a team event for squash, a Japanese player positioned well behind a Hong Kong player rammed the opponent into the side wall while going for a drop return. It's created a controversy because the Japanese literally pushed his opponent first with a shoulder charge like a rugby tackle and then just threw him into the side wall.

Labelled a contact incident, the match was temporarily suspended.

A player is expected to move aside for the opponent to return. Article 8 stipulates that an Interference (the HK guy not stepping aside) will lead to a 'let'. Point being replayed.

Leung Tsz Hin of HK however blanked the kungfu squash player, Endo Tomotaka 3-0.

Japan lost the tie 1-2.

Shivani Naik writes on Chikitha Thaniparthi

Sing a new song, Chikitha!

Compound Archery XD Los Angeles Olympics quota & Asian Games gold

It's a small but important detail in this excellent story on Chikitha Thaniparthi by Nitin Sharma in The Indian Express. Chikitha's first brush with sport was in martial arts. She learnt karate and went right up to black belt.

How does it help in Archery, you might ask.

Archery is a stationary sport. Prizes stillness. Demands extreme mental strength, concentration. There is a rhythm that elite sport demands -- where your heart rate could be off the charts, but you need to nail that one trigger or arrow releasing movement, which still needs shoulder power. To get that balance right, many athletes train in martial arts - karate, judo, jiu Jitsu, to achieve absolute mental poise / strength in that moment. Precision in imbalanced positions is the goal. It's why a Karate black belt can translate into an Asiad gold many many years later. It is mind training that becomes muscle memory.

Saina Nehwal did it in badminton. But Chikitha has gone all the way to gold.

Read about the family struggles of the Telangana girl, alongside her partner's. Sahil Jadhav from Wai, Satara, will see celebrations with "kandi pedha" - that less-sweet sweet with powdered sugar coating the melt-in-mouth fudgey pedha.

For Chikitha, it's chitti muthyalu (small pearl) rice - that delectable rice that's best served in biryanis or pulao because the pearls swallow the spice.

Big day for Compound Archery. Gold. Olympics, ba-by.

What Jyothi Surekha Vennam had said before the Asian Games began

Jyothi Surekha Vennam is competing at her fourth consecutive Asian Games. She won a medal at each of her three previous Asian Games appearances. The 30-year-old compound archer kept that streak running with a team women's gold on Wednesday morning.

“We are working really hard, preparing ourselves, making sure that everything is good as part of our equipment or be it ourselves and working towards it,” she said.

The women’s team had two opportunities to compete together at the World Cup stages before coming to the Asian Games.

“Coming to the team, it's a new team for us because this is the first time that we got to play as a team, especially for the women's team, I would like to say. And we have participated in World Cup stages three and four because for us, the games selection trials were completed in May, and we got two tournaments to participate in before the Asian Games. We are improving, we are working hard, and we are getting used to each other. And it's just that no matter what the situation is, we are there for each other,” she added.

Jyothi is one of the senior members of the squad, she sees experience as something shared across the team rather than a responsibility resting on one athlete. “I think all the team members are really experienced, I would say, in some sort of things because there's no one who is representing India in the games for the very first time. Like it's their first international tournament. They have been part of many international tournaments in previous years and this year too.”

Asian Games Day 12 Live: Neeraj Chopra writes

Two-time Olympic medallist and two-time World Championship medal winner Neeraj Chopra had to pull out of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games due to injury. But in his absence, two Indian javelin throwers, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh, claimed the silver and bronze in the event. After watching them medal at Nagoya, Neeraj took to LinkedIn to write a poignant post on India's javelin throw future. This is what Neeraj Chopra had to say:

As an athlete who has been around for a while, I get asked all kinds of questions and I do my best to answer every one of them. One of those has been - what will Indian javelin look like after I am done competing. Last night in Aichi-Nagoya, two very talented athletes answered that question. I was not competing, and yet, we had two Indians on the podium at the Asian Games. Watching Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh win medals made me very proud. And I know both of them can throw even further than they did last night.

When I spoke to Rohit before the event, I had told him to focus on himself and give his best. The most important thing at a major competition is to enjoy the occasion. Afterwards, he told me that though he was feeling confident, the conditions had made it difficult. I was really happy to see that he had learned from his experience at the Commonwealth Games - and to show maturity to compete strongly at the Asian Games.

When Yashvir reached out to me to wish me the best on my recovery, I had already recommended to the Federation that

he should be the one to compete in my place. It was great to see him make the most of that opportunity and finish with the best throw of his career so far.

What makes me happy the most is what this means for Indian javelin. For a second time, we have two Indian throwers on the podium at the Asian Games. Four of us throwers now have Asiad medals now, which shows that the pool is getting wider and deeper. And there is a reason for that. Javelin is an individual sport, but in many ways, I feel it is becoming like a team sport for India. We are all pushing each other, supporting each other and celebrating each other's success.

But there are some rules to sort that out, and after all that, they have given the result that we have today…We went for review also… I am aware that I have to accept it and move forward as soon as possible because there is so much to do. There are so many competitions coming up. There is a journey ahead. I'm aware about that. But right now, my only take is that I need some time to process.”

Asian Games Day 12 Live: Squash update

Bhuvan Gupta writes:

India meet Singapore in the women's team quarterfinals. Tanvi Khanna, Anahat Singh and Joshana Chinappa, in that order, taking the court for India.

Tanvi facing Au Yeong in the opener. The winner of the tie secures a medal and it's being played on Court 1. Is that enough to earn a live stream on Sony? I'm afraid not.

At the Raipur Sports Academy in Sonepat, coach Kuldeep Singh watches from a distance as Francis Sangma of Meghalaya tries to take down Haryana’s Rohit. He would then go on and explain to Francis the right way to execute the manoeuvre. At the Chhotu Ram Stadium in Rohtak, coach Mandeep is watching Komal of Maharashtra very closely. He then shows her the right technique to hold the opponent’s leg while attacking.

Francis and Komal are two of the many aspiring wrestlers who have moved more than 1000 kms from home to pursue wrestling excellence in Haryana. The reason behind the likes of Francis, Komal and others like Vaishnavi Patil, who represented India at the World Championships last year, moving to Haryana is the unmatched legacy and quality the state boasts of in the sport.
