With NCP and Congress joining hands, a split between BJP and Shiv Sena, and MNS abstaining from voting, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday saw Prashant Jagtap of NCP get elected as mayor and Mukari Algude of Congress as deputy mayor.
The elections were held on Thursday after Dattatraya Dhankawade of NCP and Ulhas Bagul of Congress stepped down as mayor and deputy mayor respectively on the directions of their parties, to enable other corporators to hold the posts.
The elections had gained importance as the next civic elections are just a year away. Thus, all political parties are pushing to make their presence felt.

The BJP and Shiv Sena had contested the previous civic elections as part of an alliance. However, with the parties going their separate ways in the mayoral polls, the same is likely for the next PMC election too. The MNS had earlier nominated its candidates for both posts, but withdrew at the last minute and abstained from voting.
For the post of mayor, Jagtap bagged 84 votes from NCP and Congress corporators, while BJP’s Ashok Yenpure had to settle for 25 votes and Sena’s Sachin Bhagat got 11 votes. Algude was elected as deputy mayor as he received 84 votes of NCP and Congress corporators while BJP’s Varsha Tapkir got 25 votes. The Sena candidate Yogesh Mokate got 12 votes.
Jagtap (37) is the youngest city mayor in the recent past and will hold the responsibility of ensuring the NCP retains power in the civic elections next year. He has been with NCP since its formation and held various posts in the local unit. Jagtap is a first-time corporator in PMC and has held the post of PMPML director. His mother Ratnaprabha Jagtap was NCP corporator in the previous general body.
“This is an honour and the win is dedicated to the party activists. I have struggled throughout my life to reach this level. I ran a milk distribution centre, juice centre, hotel and tourist businesses. I will give priority to improve the public transport problem in the city and work towards resolving pending issues of the city,” Jagtap said after being elected as mayor.
Deputy Mayor Algude is a third-time corporator in the PMC. He represents Pandavnagar-Wadarwadi area and was a staunch supporter of Vinayak Nimhan, former Congress MLA and now chief of city unit of Shiv Sena.
