A one man commission of Justice (retired) Sushant Chattopadhya on Monday said that the 1993 Kolkata police firing was worse than Jallianwala bagh massacre. Here are the ten points that would explain what exactly happened on that fateful day.
1. Then State Youth Congress leader Mamata Banerjee was leading a protest to Writers’ Building on July 21 demanding photo voter Id card be made mandatory.
2. In the previous state election the communist government had won the polls with huge majority.
3. The opposition Congress had dubbed it fraud and was demanding voter’s photo ID card to ensure fair elections.
4. As the Youth Congress workers reached near writer building police intervened to halt them.
5. The protesters were a kilometre away from the Writers’ Building when police opened fire killing 13 Congress workers.
6. The then police commissioner Tushar Talukdar later in a press address said that he was not aware of one of his junior had opened fire on the protesters.
7. The incident in which Mamata Banerjee was also hurt turned out to be a turning point in her political life.
8. Mamata Banerjee who at that time also was a rising star on the political arena of West Bengal, got huge sympathy from the masses. More and more people joined her and she later founded her political party Trinamool Congress.
9. Twenty one years later when she became the Chief Minister of West Bengal she set up the one one inquiry into the 1993 police firing.
10. The Sushanta Chatterjee commission in its report on Monday said that the control room officers were “vicariously responsible” and “overacted to please their political bosses. It also ordered a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each of those killed in the incident.
