UP Governor clears Azam’s university

The approval to the amendment bill will not only provide minority status to the Rampur-based private university, promoted by Cabinet minister Azam Khan, but also make its de-recognition process difficult.  Azam had repeatedly criticised the Governor’s House for not giving assent to the bill.

Sources said Qureshi gave his assent to the Bill on July 11. The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions had granted minority status to the university in May last year but Governor B L Joshi, who quit office last month, had withheld his approval to the bill.

“The bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly as well as Legislative Council seven years ago. I got it examined and even took the opinion of Advocate General. All its merits and demerits were discussed and it was found that everything was in order.” Qureshi told The Indian Express. The Governor added he gave his assent “looking into the merit of the case”.
