Gujarat CM faces challenge from within

It’s no surprise that Narendra Modi casts a big shadow over Gujarat. That will remain CM Anandiben Patel’s bane and boon in 2015 as well. Modi’s remote control will be evident in the first month itself when Gujarat will host two major events, the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit. The Prime Minister’s Office is calling the shots at the events.

The message is not lost on the state bureaucrats, who enjoyed tremendous clout under Modi. However, those acquainted with the political goings-on in Gandhinagar believe the CM knows better than to project herself as her own person. At all her public functions, Anandiben makes it a point to mention Modi and his policies and that she has been following them religiously.

With the opposition Congress largely subdued, her biggest rivals are within the party. She and BJP president Amit Shah are known not to get along, and talk still continues of him eventually replacing her. On December 30, another hurdle was cleared in Shah’s way as he was discharged in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case.

With Anandiben enjoying little loyalty among party cadres either, except as Modi’s choice for the job, her position remains uncertain.

In such a scenario, the one outcome Anandiben must dread is an adverse performance in the coming elections to urban local bodies in the state.
