Former Union minister D Purandeswari, who recently quit the Congress and the government, on Friday joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
In another development, the National People’s Party (NPP), led by former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma, offered its support to the NDA and proposed BJP president Rajnath Singh to fight the general elections together.
“Former Union Minister Smt D Purandeswari joined the BJP today. I welcome her into the party fold,” BJP president Rajnath Singh wrote in his Twitter post, after Purandeswari called on him.
Earlier, the former Union minister also met top BJP leaders L K Advani, Sushma Swaraj as well as Venkaiah Naidu.
Purandeswari, daughter of TDP founder late N T Rama Rao, recently quit the Congress protesting bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. She had won last Lok Sabha elections from Vishakhapattanam.
Meanwhile, P A Sangma and his daughter Agatha, who is an NCP Lok Sabha member, called on the BJP president in the evening with a proposal to contest the general elections formally under the NDA. Sangma has demanded nine Lok Sabha seats for the NPP across Meghalaya, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Sangma, who was a founder member of the NCP, parted ways in 2012, when he decided to contest Presidential elections as a BJP-supported independent candidate against the UPA’s nominee and current President Pranab Mukherjee.
