A day after the BJP-led NDA conceded defeat to the Grand Alliance in the Bihar Assembly elections, Amit Shah’s “crackers will go off in Pakistan” comment has reverberated in the front pages of Pakistani newspapers,
The BJP president’s comment may have been an attempt to polarise the elections in a state where caste equations are deeply entrenched in the social fabric. However, there is some semblance of truth looking at the way the Pakistani media toasted “Modi’s defeat”.
The Dawn was particularly caustic in its headline — Bihar steals Modi’s firecrackers — and commentary as the paper termed the Bihar verdict a mandate against Modi’s “cow politics”.
A majority of the English publications in Pakistan ran the Bihar story on their front pages with equally catchy headlines. “Bihar voters put Modi out to pasture”, appears to be a firm favourite as at least three papers ran the story with the same headline.
Another newspaper that did not hold back from taking a dig was The News International. It squarely laid the blame at Modi’s feet for failing to rein in BJP hardliners during the Bihar campaign.
A closer look by any student of media analysis should be able to find the finer print in their copy. Barring a few such as The Nation and Geo TV, no media organisation was subtle in their attack on Modi.
