Mizoram’s most influential and largest mass-based voluntary organisation has demanded removal of Sericulture and Fisheries Minister Buddha Dhan Chakma over allegations he was part of a meeting which declared the boycott of a bypoll in a Chakma-dominated seat earlier this month.
A meeting of Young Mizo Association leaders Friday alleged B D Chakma was part of a meeting of Chakma leaders who decided to boycott byelection to the Borapansury-II seat in protest of Mizo Students Association’s plans to build a rest-house for Mizos in the southwest Mizoram town.
The boycott was successful as not even a single vote was cast on June 4. The seat has more than 1,700 registered voters. “The YMA is convinced that Minister B D Chakma is no longer fit to serve as a minister because he has acted in a way that threatens the unity of the people of Mizoram in spite of being someone who has taken an oath under the constitution,” a statement by the association said.
Chakma said, “I attended the meeting to represent my party because all political party leaders were invited to attend, but I opposed the decision to boycott the bypolls. I am part of the government, a member of the Council of Ministers. Why would I support such a decision?”
