Comparing the pepper spray incident in Lok Sabha last week with the scandalous cash-for-votes episode of 2008, BJP veteran L K Advani on Sunday blamed the Congress for the recent chaos in the House and said the unruly scenes are “shameful for the prestige and reputation of the Indian Parliament”. He also called the present government the most corrupt since Independence.
“The most disgraceful scam that came to light during UPA I was the cash-for-votes scam. No less shameful for the prestige and reputation of the Indian Parliament than this scam… is the ugly scene witnessed under UPA II,” Advani said in his blog post highlighting how “all limits were crossed when a Congress MP pulled out a pepper spray and started spraying it, leaving MPs including Sushma Swaraj with tears in the eyes, and many others coughing in acute discomfort”.
He reminded it was ruling party members who disrupted the Parliament.
“With the present government, session after session had to be adjourned due to chaos over Telangana between supporters and opponents,” Advani said adding he was “shocked one day to see as many as half-a-dozen ministers of the present government disregarding presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress Chairperson Soniaji in the House and rush into the well of the House and join the ugly ruckus ”.
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley reminded Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi that Congress members had held up Parliament and not the Opposition Rahul had blamed for stalling anti-corruption bills.
“I don’t think Rahul Gandhi has had time to either come to the House or acquaint himself with the disturbance being created by his own party members,” Jaitley said in an article on his website. Jaitley said BJP was ready to cooperate for passage of non-controversial legislations provided the ruling party controlled its members.
