Grappling with the situation in his state roiled by ethnic clashes, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi Sunday, a day after the latter held an all-party meeting on the steps to be taken to restore normalcy.
“Under Amit Shah Ji’s close supervision, the State and Central Govt have been able to control the violence to a great extent in the past week. It may be noted that there has been no report of casualties due to the violence since the 13th of June,” he said.
He said Shah assured that the Central government would take all possible steps to restore normalcy in Manipur.
“Further, Amit Shah Ji advised us to strengthen our work towards achieving everlasting peace and also sought the cooperation of every stakeholder in Manipur to ensure that peace prevails in the State,” the Chief Minister said.
He said he was joined at the meeting by BJP Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra, Rajya Sabha MP and Manipur titular king Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba and state Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata Singh.
At Saturday’s all-party meeting, attended by representatives of 18 parties, there was a demand for removal of Biren Singh as CM. Some at the meeting alleged that he had been functioning in a “partisan” manner. The Chief Minister was not present at the meeting.
The meeting saw the Opposition parties targeting the government and demanding, almost in unison, that an all-party delegation be sent to Imphal, which they said would help in restoring the confidence of the people.
Shah told them that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was constantly monitoring the situation.
The Centre, Shah said, was committed to resolving the issue by taking everyone along. He said the situation in the state was slowly returning to normal.
Many at the all-party meeting asked the government to fix a time frame for the plans it had to restore peace and normalcy in the state. Shah told the leaders that the government would consider their suggestions with an “open mind”.
