Launching an attack on JMM chief Shibu Soren and his Chief Minister son Hemant Soren, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the “father and son” have filled their own coffers and did nothing for tribals in Jharkhand.

Taking on ruling JMM in its home turf, Santhal Pargana, the Prime Minister addressed rallies in Dumka and Barheit, the two seats from where the chief minister is contesting.

Modi alleged that the ruling party did nothing but loot its poor tribals and asked the people to punish it in the polls.

“Shouldn’t the youth here get employment so that they don’t have to go thousands of miles away for job?… The youth could fill up the coffers of the government,” he said.

“Baap beta ne apna tijory bhari (father and son filled up their own coffers), they will not let anyone go ahead” he said referring to the Sorens.

Modi went on to say that the voters in Jharkhand must punish the father and son in this election.

“If a child commits an error, will his mother reward him with a laddoo? Won’t the mother punish to correct the child? Even if you like them, you should vote for the BJP to punish them…. Punish them now so that they will be of use to you five years later.”

Modi campaigned for nine candidates, including one of the LJP, at Dumka.

Even though adivasis in the crowd were far outnumbered, Modi made it a point to talk about them extensively. “I am willing to give my life for the welfare of my poor adivasis,” the PM said.

“They (Opposition) tell adivasis that Modi government will take away your land. I tell you, there is no one in this country who can take away the rights of the adivasis,” Modi said.

Modi said just as a mother does not give sweets to her son if he commits a wrong deed so should the people punish the “looters” in the final phase of voting.

“Shouldn’t the youth here get employment so that they don’t have to go thousands of miles away for job?”

Asking the people not to believe in rumours that they would lose land if BJP is voted to power, he said, “No one can snatch tribal land … Welfare of tribals can only strengthen the country.”

Referring to allegations by political parties that if it wins BJP would change Chhota Nagpur Tenancy Act and Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, he said, “They are lying and spreading rumours … They don’t have any issues against the Modi government.”

JMM had won 10 out of the total 18 seats in Santhal Parganas in the 2009 assembly elections.

Polling for the remaining 16 seats in Jharkhand will be held in the fifth and final phase on December 20. Counting will be taken up on December 23 for the 81-member Assembly.
