From Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet colleagues to Congress leaders, politicians across the spectrum on Sunday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the 93rd anniversary of the start of the Dandi March.

The 24-day march from March 12 to April 5, 1930, was a tax resistance campaign against the salt monopoly of the British. It began at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and concluded at the coastal village of Dandi. It was based on Gandhi’s principle of non-violence, or satyagraha, and marked the start of the Civil Disobedience movement.

PM Modi said the march would be remembered as a “determined effort against various forms of injustice”. He tweeted, “I pay homage to Bapu and all those who took part in the Dandi March. This was an important event in our nation’s history.”

The Congress said the march “symbolised India’s quest for self-reliance”.

The Indian Youth Congress and INC TV shared visuals of the Dandi March, reiterating the message that “peace and non-violence cannot be defeated”.

Union ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Anurag Thakur and G Kishan Reddy hailed the march that “put India on the road to freedom” and “remains a testament to the strength and resilience of the Indian people”.

The AAP’s Telangana unit also paid tribute to Gandhi and the march “against the British colonial empire’s tax monopoly laws.”
