Hours before the results are to be announced, a festive fervor gripped the BJP head office at Nariman Point. While the roads leading up to the office and Mantralaya were lined with the saffron flags, the “diwali” lanterns and “rangoli” outside the office reflected the party’s symbol, a lotus.
The sounds of “dhol”, “tutari” (a traditional Maharashtrian wind-instrument) marked the beginning of the celebrations. An LED screen outside also gave constant updates to the jubilant party workers and supporters seen celebrating on the roads. A large hoarding with the pictures of the senior party leaders greeted the supporters to the office. Standing out among a wave of saffron were a few blue-coloured Republican Party of India (RPI) flags, the party which has aligned with the BJP for the assembly elections, 2014.

Inside the office, PM Narendra Modi’s cut-outs were placed next to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s sculpture decorated with flowers. Senior party leader and MP Kirit Somaiya addressed the media along with Shaina NC and Vinod Tawde, leader of opposition in the legislative council. A banner behind the leaders read, “Nation first, party second, self last.”
“The people of Maharashtra have given the responsibility to BJP and we will fulfill their wishes. This is the first time that BJP has crossed the century mark in the State while all the parties are trailing behind,” said Somaiya.
The leader also said that the party high command will decide the further strategies after the final results are out. Indicating an alliance with the Sena, the party in second position in the State, Somaiya added, “Modi’s governance has been well received in the State. After the final tally is out, we will hold discussions to form the next government. We will look at aligning only with those parties that support the BJP’s vision document.”
The BJP leaders will meet post-lunch to discuss the future plans of the party. The BJP is currently leading in 115 seats of the 288 seats in Maharashtra, with the Sena leading in 62 seats.
