"This is the first time since the formation of Jharkhand that we have won a seat here,” said a BSP leader.

The Bahujan Samaj Party has made its debut in Jharkhand assembly with its candidate Kushwaha Shivpujan Mehta winning from Hussainabad seat in Palamau district. He defeated NCP’s Kamlesh Singh by a margin of over 27,000 votes. The party had contested all seats in Jharkhand.

“This is the first time since the formation of Jharkhand that we have won a seat here. It is a big success for BSP. We have finally made a beginning in the state,” said Brijlal Khabri, BSP’s state in-charge and former Rajya Sabha MP, adding that BSP had also increased its vote share from one per cent in the last election to 1.8 per cent.

Khabri said 39-year-old Kushwaha is one of the oldest cadres of BSP in Jharkhand. “He contested assembly polls in 2004 and 2009 but lost ,”he said. BSP chief Mayawati addressed a lone rally in the state in Hussainabad ahead of the first phase.
