Badal gets EC notice for ‘funding’ talk

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira had filed a complaint about this to the EC a few days ago.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s reported remarks urging the business community to “quietly fund” his party’s poll campaign Wednesday got him into trouble with the Election Commission holding him in violation of the model code of conduct and asking him to explain his stance by May 2.

“Croran rupaiyya kharch hunda hai, bhaven hisab vich assi thoda vikhaunde haan… parde naal davo, sahmane na davo (crores of rupees are spent on campaigning, though we show less in expenditure details… give quietly, don’t give openly),” Badal is alleged to have told businessmen in Jalandhar on April 12.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira had filed a complaint about this to the EC a few days ago.

Stating that it was “prima facie” of the opinion that by making this statement Badal had violated model code of conduct and “also incited others to violate the law”, the EC served a notice to Badal giving him an opportunity to explain his stance failing which it will take a decision without further reference to him.
