What next for Annamalai? Speculation rife in BJP over future of party’s outgoing Tamil Nadu chief
While a section of the BJP claims Annamalai will be involved in next year’s Kerala Assembly polls, a few say he may be up for a national position in the party, with a Union government role also possible “at a later stage”
K Annamalai (Photo/Facebook@k.annamalai.ips) With Nainar Nagendran at the helm of the BJP Tamil Nadu unit and its alliance with the AIADMK official, outgoing state BJP chief K Annamalai, who is seen to have stepped down to “facilitate” the tie-up, is likely to assume a “national role” or may be given a “greater responsibility” in the South.
Indications to that effect came from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who hailed the outgoing state chief for his “unprecedented contributions”. “The BJP will leverage Annamalai ji’s organisational skills in the party’s national framework,” Shah said in Chennai on Friday.
A senior BJP leader said Annamalai, an IPS officer-turned politician, could be made the party’s national vice-president or general secretary. “He could also be inducted into the government at a later stage,” the party functionary said on the condition of anonymity.
