In an era where digital devices are ubiquitous, the incidence of childhood myopia, or nearsightedness, is on the rise. This common vision condition, if not addressed timely, can lead to serious eye problems in the future. Understanding myopia and taking proactive steps in its management is crucial for parents to ensure their children’s visual health.

What is myopia and why does it occur in children?

According to Dr Abhinav Singh, senior consultant, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, myopia is a refractive error where distant objects appear blurry while close ones are seen clearly. “It occurs when the eye’s shape causes light rays to bend (refract) incorrectly, focusing images in front of the retina instead of on it. In children, myopia can progress rapidly with age, especially during growth spurts.”

The exact cause of myopia is often a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Increased screen time, less time spent outdoors, and intensive near work like reading and writing can contribute to its development in children.

Decreasing the chances of childhood myopia

According to Dr Mohd Haseeb Beg, consultant opthalmologist, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, parents can encourage outdoor activities, limit screen time, and ensure proper lighting during activities.

Adding on to that, Dr Singh expanded:

1. Limit screen time: In the digital age, limiting screen time is challenging yet essential. Encourage children to take regular breaks from screens to reduce eye strain. Following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds) can be effective.

2. Balanced diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fish can contribute to good eye health. Nutrients like Vitamin A, C, E, and omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for maintaining healthy eyes.

3. Regular eye exams: Early detection is key in managing myopia. Regular eye exams can help in identifying myopia early and deciding on the best course of action.

General practices for good vision in children

1. Proper lighting: Ensure that children have adequate lighting while reading or working on tasks. Poor lighting can contribute to eye strain.

2. Encourage reading and writing habits: While moderation is key, reading and writing can help in the overall development of the eye’s focusing system. Ensure that children maintain a healthy distance from their books and screens.

3. Be alert to symptoms: Watch for signs like squinting, frequent headaches, or holding books too close to the face. These may indicate vision problems.

4. Educate about eye health: Teach children about the importance of eye health and good practices like not rubbing their eyes and maintaining hygiene to avoid infections.
