Shelja Sen, a child psychologist and family therapist, throws light on why it is important to communicate with children. She is introduced by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, who remarks, “If she needs to study the power of words, she should talk to my children…My two older children, who are now young adults, are not interested in talking. And the younger one won’t stop talking.”
In an era, where there is so much to talk in the real and digital world, we are losing the art of communicating with our children. She focuses on the fact that we often criticise children for their misbehaviour and scold them. However, this is not the right approach. We must understand the feelings of the children, instead of blaming them. As a parent, you must have an insight into your child’s mind.
She states, “We don’t teach children, children teach us. They show us a mirror in which we clearly see our own challenges and faults. And alongside they show us a way to be better, sensitive, and more aware human beings.”
Shelja also has a wonderful piece of advice for children to give their parents a chance. Start talking and discussing your choices as well as decisions with your parents.
