The duo have also been barred from holding any public office for 10 years and slapped with a fine of PAK Rs 787 million each (roughly Rs. 23 crore each), reported Pakistani daily Dawn. Pakistan goes to polls on February 8.
The sentence, pronounced by Judge Mohammad Bashir at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail where Khan is incarcerated, came a day after the 71-year-old Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the cipher case. Bibi was not present at the court, as per Dawn report.
The Toshakhana case refers to a series of corruption charges levelled against the cricketer-turned-politician for allegedly submitting fake details of gifts worth millions that he received while in office from foreign governments.
Reacting to the judgment, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf said that Khan and Bibi were not given a right to defence.
“Completely destruction of any existing law in Pakistan in 2 days. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have faced yet another kangaroo trial in which no right to defence was given to both. Like cipher, this case has no basis to stand in any Higher court. It’s shameful how a complete disregard and mockery of law is in place,” it said in a post on X.
Big question marks arise on our judicial system now. How the cipher and Tosha Khana case were conducted have exposed a complete disregard of law by trial court.
Surely, such sham trial belongs to dustbin only at HC! #ناانصافی_کا_بدلہ_ووٹ_سے https://t.co/jzyWrHx4yt
