•Political party manifestoes contain emotive issues and populist schemes rather than concrete and constructive policies and programmes (Lotus vision,IE,April 4). The BJPs is not an exception. By including controversial and trite topics such as abrogation of article 370 the BJP fails to recognise that such issues might not necessarily bring electoral gains. In fact, resorting to such tactics is indicative of its vulnerability.

•Barring contentious issues such as the scrapping of Article 370 and the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the BJP manifesto promises are based on current realities: BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh does provide rice and wheat at a very low cost. Further, the partys promise of channelling Indian wealth out of Swiss banks is a timely and wise idea.

•The BJPs manifesto is merely old wine in a new bottle. One should be reminded that the BJP failed to carry out what its manifesto pledged the last time it was in power. In fact, action over vital issues were set aside in order to appease coalition partners. The situation
currently remains unchanged.

•Outrageous promises are being made by political parties. Free colour television and mobiles to the poor; higher exemption limits on income tax for the middle class and so forth. These look good on paper; however the real test is whether they can be delivered. Given the lack of implementation of previous pledges, new ones feel hollow.

Whos to blame
•This refers to Mayawati hits back after Maneka.. (IE,April 5). Mayawati has aptly said that being a mother is not a prerequisite to understanding the pain of others. Maneka Gandhis claim is counterproductive; she should instead have made amends for her sons behaviour.

Overindulgent
•A sad fact about the nature of political debates is its indulgence in comparative politics. For every error on the part of one party there is a comparable example from the other. This counters constructive dialogue,as can be seen in the comparisons of the Babri Masjid demolition and 26/11. Idle judgement pushes political discourse into a reactive mode and fails to enlighten the public.

Bad example
•This refers to North Korea defies world… and More fireworks (IE,April 6). North Koreas reclusive behaviour is overwhelming and worrying. The country has displayed the idea that an impoverished nation can be as assertive as a superpower. This will be a cause for concern if other countries attempt to emulate such practices.
