The resurfacing of the Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute is unfortunate (Border row lays out in BJP…,IE,January 21). Is it not a bygone issue as detailed by the Mahajan Commission in the 60s? Unfortunately,Maharashtra politicians are re-opening a Pandoras Box prior to the elections. What is more shocking is that the people of Belgaum, the disputed area, are a part of Karnataka regardless of their language. The case now rests with the Supreme Court and Maharastras powerful shouldnt take the law into their hands.

One way out
Muammar Qaddafis This land is your land… (IE,January 27) may well provide a solution to the Israel-Palestine crisis. The solution is now no longer with Palestinians or Israelis themselves. The crisis has generated an international dimension, largely due to US support for Israel. Libya,no longer an international pariah, has a crucial role to play as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. It can voice the concerns of the Arab world.
Is the Mangalore pub attack symptomatic of the Talibanisation of India (Girls, interrupted IE,January 27)? How else are we to construe the periodic hooliganism of the rightwing moral police? The proliferation of these groups is alarming. These self-proclaimed bigots are actually hypocrites.
While we debate the cultural fallout of pubs, the manner in which non-traditionalists are treated needs legal intervention. The Sri Rama Senes misdeed was a violation of individual liberty and person. The episode might have been a cheap publicity stunt. One also feels alarmed at news of trouble from various quarters of Karnataka that seem to have communal overtones. Is it the party in power thats to blame or everybody together?
Barack Obama has begun well vis-à-vis India. This is obvious from his Republic Day message to the Indian president. Further, his warning to Pakistan demonstrates how keen he is on countering terrorism. His deputy,Joe Biden, too has asked Pakistan to step up its counter-terror operations.

Opportunity in crisis
Ila Patnaiks Governors choice (IE,January 23) sounded the death knell for an economy on the verge of recession. Interest rate cuts did not translate into cheaper loans and credit rates despite the RBIs attempts. The real aim is to restore confidence, which cant be built overnight. However, the crisis offers a wonderful opportunity for bringing the majority of poor into mainstream economic activity.
