Flash in the pan?
APROPOS Because he says so (IE,October 16),Arvind Kejriwal is riding on a wave of antipathy towards politicians. The multiple scams have left people fed up with the countrys politicians. It remains to be seen how far Kejriwal will be able to go by exploiting such sentiments. However, his reach is very limited and it is possible that he will disappear from mainstream politics before long.
Toll and trouble
THIS refers to The entitled (IE,October 15). An MP is a representative of and responsible to the people. He or she must be trustworthy and observe all the established norms. But the behaviour of Porbandar MP Vitthal Radadia at a toll indicates MPs are just the opposite. Strict action must be taken against him so that it become a lesson for others.
No minor error
I OPPOSE the suggestion made by Haryanas khap panchayats and backed by former CM Om Prakash Chautala, that the marriage age for girls be lowered in order to prevent rapes (Chautala backs Khap marriage age idea,IE,October 11). Younger minors are victims of such crimes as well. Lowering the minimum age for marriage will make Indian society regressive. It is imperative to improve the quality of life in Haryana, where rapes are on the rise. Education must be made compulsory for girls so that they can work and be independent. Reservation for women in educational and vocational institutions must be increased. Punishment for domestic violence should be stringent. Awareness levels should increase and people should be educated on gender equality.
The augean stables
CORRUPTION and fraud seem to have become an epidemic in the country. The wave of anti-corruption movements appears to have done some good by spreading awareness about the need to have a mechanism to check corruption (Cong slams Kejriwal for targeting Robert Vadra,IE,October 7). However, even as non-violent agitations by social activists continue,we need politicians and administrators who lead clean and honest lives.
Manjit Singh Juneja
THE remarks made by Law Minister Salman Khurshid against Arvind Kejriwal and a media group were unseemly (Salman Khurshid to take legal action against Arvind Kejriwal,Aaj Tak,IE,October 11). At his press conference earlier this week,he called them guttersnipes, threatened to take certain mediapersons to court, and asked them to leave the press conference. I shudder to think that our country is in the hands of such bullying politicians.
From Colorado to Uruguay, experiments with legalising marijuana usage. India should take note...
The insensitive state response to an alleged rape and murder shows what hasnt changed for women...
The prime minister finally held a press conference but evaded the questions, shifted the blame...
