Bill on land ceiling

Union Finance Minister C. Subramaniam said that the government would bring in a new law to “enforce the socialisation of urban land and ceiling on ownership”. He said the law would be enforced with retrospective effect, dating back to the day the prime minister announced her 20-point economic programme. This, he said, would prevent speculation and transactions and no one would be able to escape the ceiling. He also said he would discuss measures for effective implementation of the PM’s economic reconstruction programme with chief ministers. Restriction on domestic consumption of power had been introduced as a measure to check conspicuous consumption, he said.

Anand Marg raided

Rajasthan police raided the regional office of Anand Marg in Jaipur and found five human skulls and a number of daggers. Jaipur police superintendent said a “deep probe”, as desired by the chief minister, would be conducted about the activities of the Anand Marg. The Marg was one of the organisations that was banned soon after the imposition of the Emergency.

Encounter killings

Six Naxalites — two in Andhra Pradesh and four in Bihar — were killed in police operations. Police in both states claimed the forces opened fire after coming under attack from Naxal squads.

Comoro Islands free

The Comoro Islands in the Indian Ocean unilaterally declared independence from France, to which the latter responded by imposing an emergency in the island. An overwhelming majority of residents of

the French colony had voted for independence in a referendum held in December. In June, the French National Assembly had ratified a bill that sought independence for the islands and forwarded it to the senate for approval.
