The railway ministry retired the general manager of the Northern Railway and told the general manager of the North Eastern Railway to go on leave for 45 days as punishment for staff absenteeism in the departments under them. Railway Minister Kamalapati Tripathi also said steps would be taken against ticketless travel, unauthorised ticket reservation agencies and touts, alarm-chain pulling, theft etc.

Food prices fall

Wholesale prices of essential commodities fell after the imposition of the Emergency, a report claimed. Retails prices of sugar and vanaspathi too came down and traders said they would fall further.

Costly beer

A report on the Delhi liquor market said retail prices of beer had remained stagnant despite wholesale prices “plummeting”. The prices ranged from Rs 6.50 to Rs 11 for a bottle. The number of beer brands in the market rose to 80 compared to just over 20 the previous year, though trade sources claimed demand had fallen by 35 per cent.

J&K polls big

Heavy polling was reported from Jammu and Kashmir, where bypolls were held for the Ganderbal and Devsar assembly constituencies. Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah was contesting from Ganderbal. According to report, the seat recorded over 75 per cent polling, and women outnumbered men in many wards.

A just society

Thirteen organisations from Latin America issued a political document that denounced US imperialism as the main enemy of liberty and equality of people. The declaration was adopted at the UN International Women’s Year conference in Mexico City. The delegates from Latin America affirmed their commitment to the anti-imperialist struggle and the making of a just society.
