In two separate resolutions, the Congress Working Committee, the party’s top policymaking body, endorsed the Emergency and the 21-point economic programme announced by Indira Gandhi. The CWC also decided to set up the machinery to involve party cadres and allies in the implementation of the economic programme. The party elders reviewed the situation that led to the Emergency and concluded that the proclamation had become necessary to forestall the subversive attempts of some opposition parties and groups. The meeting also welcomed the ban on the RSS, Jamaat-e-Islami, Ananda Marg and their front organisations.

SC On Indira Case
The Supreme Court scheduled to hear Indira Gandhi’s review petition of the Allahabad High Court verdict on August 11. The verdict had triggered developments that led the Congress government to impose the Emergency on June 26.

Space Meet
