An accord would have been reached by now but the Centre backed out on account of possible changes in the Congress (I) administration in the state. No ADB Loans
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) lacks sufficient resources to make loans to India, the US official in charge of the bank said. The US position was criticised by Edward J Waters, a vice-president of the firm of Kidder, Peabody and Co Inc. He said other member countries are concerned that the US is trying to use political pressure to prevent India from getting loans.
USSR Armour
The Indian Army is importing a number of missile-equipped armoured vehicles from the USSR for field reconnaissance, it is believed. The vehicle, known as BRDM, will fulfil a long standing requirement of the Indian Army in the area of field reconnaissance. Pakistan has had “recce and support battalions” for many years now and they were used to the discomfiture of Indian troops in the last war. However, the Indian outfit is likely to be better equipped.
Gandhi’s kin
A spokesman of the Sabarmati Ashram has expressed surprise at statements from a woman in London claiming to be an “adopted granddaughter” of Mahatma Gandhi. The spokesman said he was not aware of Gandhi having adopted anyone as his granddaughter. Neither the trustees nor the inmates of the ashram know anything about her.
