RBI’s Schemes

The Reserve Bank has practically come under the dual control of the finance and industry ministries after the announcement by the prime minister to step up employment through increased bank credit. Manmohan Singh, RBI Governor, has been going between these two ministries explaining that the RBI had already initiated a number of concessional schemes towards promoting employment in the small industrial sectors.

PM Gandhi’s UN Call

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s call to world leaders to meet at the United Nations for a fresh look at global issues symbolises “a source of real encouragement” at a time when the value of multilateral diplomacy is being questioned, said Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. The Peruvian diplomat referred to the prime minister’s move in his report “on the work of the organisation”.

Sri Lanka Crisis

The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), which represents labourers of Indian origin in Sri Lanka, expressed a lack of confidence in steps taken by the Sri Lanka government to protect them and has decided to take steps to return to India en bloc. The decision was disclosed by general secretary M S Sellasamy.
