Farakka Claims
Administrator Gen H M Ershad charged India with denying Bangladesh its “rightful’’ share of Farakka waters and said the “waters have to be given and we have to get it”. Ershad referred to his meeting with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and said “I told her that people of Bangladesh will have to be given the right to live. I wanted an equitable share and distribution of Farakka waters.”
Thaw In Afghanistan
There is a possibility of a major breakthrough in Afghanistan with Soviet forces beginning a partial withdrawal before the year is out. This optimistic picture seems to have emerged following the visit of Pakistan Foreign Minister Yaqub Khan to Beijing. PTI learns authoritatively that “95 per cent of the agreement for phased withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan has already been reached over two rounds of indirect talks under the chairmanship of UN special envoy Dieco Cordovaz.”
