Members of Parliament in both Houses expressed their shock and concern over Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s security following the FBI’s claim that it had unearthed a conspiracy to kill him during his forthcoming visit to the US. While the Speaker said he would consider the demand for a discussion in the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha chairman allowed each party leader to make a brief mention on the subject.

Security Revamp

The government will soon hand over the problem of tackling terrorists in the country to the National Security Guard, the elite force being raised to strengthen the internal security duties presently being looked after by the police and paramilitary forces. The Prime Minister’s parliamentary secretary, Arun Singh, who oversees the internal security matters along with the security of the PM, has been entrusted with the task of expediting work.

New Gen Extremists

The most disturbing aspect of the recent resurgence of terrorism in Punjab and other parts of the country is the induction of a new generation of Sikh extremists. When the army withdrew from Punjab last year, most of the hardcore extremists had been effectively neutralised. But many of those allegedly involved in recent terrorism do not figure in the “wanted persons” list drawn up last year.

Militants Kill 150

At least 150 Sinhalese, including five Buddhist nuns, were killed by Tamil militants in the ancient Sinhala capital of Anuradhapura. The Ministry for Information said security troops were searching for a Tamil commando group whose members had opened fire. The attack is believed to be in retaliation for the alleged killing of more than 75 Tamils by the army.
