The Gulf war seems to be spreading beyond the borders of Iran and Iraq, with both countries renewing their attacks on neutral shipping in the Gulf. Iraq has declared Iranian air space a prohibited war zone. As potentially decisive ground fighting raged for over a week and the 12-day-old “war of cities” showed no let-up, Iraq declared that international passenger aircraft entering Iranian air space could be exposed to attacks by Iraqi warplanes.
Assassin Caught
A Sikh terrorist carrying parts of a submachine gun was detained by the British police on arrival in London from Canada on what is reported to have been a mission to assassinate a high-ranking Indian, either in this country or in India. Scotland Yard said the man, who arrived from Vanconver, had been detained at Heathrow airport and questioned by officers of the anti-terrorist squad.
New Limit
More than 100 large industrial houses will escape the existing obligation to get clearance for expansion under the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act, following the redefinition of large houses as those with assets exceeding Rs 100 crore (the earlier limit was Rs 20 crore). Under the old limit, there were 180 larger industrial houses. Two-thirds of these will now fall outside the purview of the MRTP Act.
Cong-I In Bihar
The Congress (I) tally in the 324-member Bihar Assembly has risen to 193 with the declaration of the revised result of the Islampur constituency in favour of the party which was earlier attributed to the CPI candidate due to a clerical error, according to the state election office.
