Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared that science “must permeate the whole of our national life, all areas of endeavour and all regions”. Israel’s Attack

Four Israeli warplanes bombed and set ablaze a Palestinian guerrilla base and an ammunition depot in a retaliatory strike south-east of Beirut drawing intense ground fire from the Syrian-held area. In the capital, a lone motorcycle gunman shot and seriously wounded the French consul’s driver in the Mreisseh waterfront residential neighbourhood. Beirut Radio said in a retraction of its earlier report that the driver was killed.

The Election Commission has decided not to pursue its recent recommendation for imposition of the President’s rule in states before holding assembly elections. The Chief Election Commissioner, R K Trivedi, told UNI that the recommendation had created a lot of confusion among political parties. He regretted that the suggestion had been read in the context of centre-state relations and the recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
